Meet Ann Garrett, Author of TLC for Frazzled Kids: Helping Grown Ups Help Kids

Picture
What inspired you to become an author?
My first memory of wanting to become an author took place when I was five years old. I was sitting on the floor in a little old library reading a Dr. Seuss book. I remember thinking, “I want to write books too.” When I finally did start writing I was fortunate to meet the real Dr. Seuss. I blurted out, “Oh my God, you’re the Cat in the Hat! He smiled and put a finger to his lips as if it were a secret. After that we had a great conversation and I told him about the above event.

How did you come up with the idea for the for TLC for Frazzled Kids: Helping Grown Ups Help Kids?
I am not the originator of the methodology behind TLC for Frazzled Kids: Helping Grown Ups Help Kids. My dear friend and colleague Nancy Goodell developed this way of dealing with children over forty years ago. I began working at a therapeutic school where she was the director. It was there that I learned TLC for Frazzled Kids and used its methods as a crisis counselor. After Nancy retired from the school, she mentioned that she would like to write a book about TLC but didn’t quite know how to go about it. . I am a published author of six children’s books and knew what it took to write a book. That is when our collaboration began.

In what ways do you think children and parents will benefit most from your book?
The book teaches adults and children how to manage strong feelings, communicate and problem solve when they are frazzled, upset, or angry. It also teaches both children and adults how to calm down before they say or do something that they would later regret.

What advice would you give to a new author trying to get their book published?
If you are a children’s author it is very important that you become a member of SCBWI. This is a wonderful organization that can help you in so many ways.

Are you currently working on other books?
I am always working on a book, short story or poem, either in my head or with a pen and paper. I am also a major rewriter. I rewrote my book Keeper of the Swamp twenty times!  Nancy and I are also doing research for a new book, TLC for Frazzled Adults: Helping Adults Help Themselves.

What are the titles of your children’s books?
I am the author of Fins and Flippers/Scales and Nippers, Keeper of the Swamp, Tales of Tails, What's for Lunch?, and What's for Dinnner?
