Meet Anna Church, Author of A Bug Who Needs a Hug and Hug-A-Bug Travels Series

Picture
What inspired you to become a children's author?
Now that I am a retired teacher, my husband and my children, both of whom have their own children, told me it was time for me to publish my stories to share with children around the world. I always uses Hug-A Bug in my classroom as a teaching aid to help children learn about sharing, love and cultural understanding. Hug-A-Bug is a small pom-pom character that my students could make and place on their desks. I told them whenever they were lonely, sad or just needed a hug to give their bug a hug-a-bug hug. Everyone needs hugs!

How did you come up with the idea for Hug-A-Bug Travels to Egypt?
I have taught both in America and around the world. Egypt was the last overseas school system I taught at. When I started writing the Hug-A-Bug series, I wanted to create a series that children could use as a resource for school, book reports and global projects. Additionally, our children are becoming more global than any prior generation and need to understand that no matter how different other people are, we all just need a hug.

How many books have you written?
I have two self-published books and the third is nearing completion.

What was your favorite book as a child?
Little Red Riding Hood. My grandma made me a red cape with a hood and I always felt special wearing it.

What do you hope children will learn from your books?
The books help children discover other cultures, languages and famous geographical places in a fun and inviting environment. Through their journey they learn the importance of caring for others around you and that everyone needs a hug from time to time! Additional projects are available on the website to encourage children to continue to explore the locations, cultures and information beyond what is presented in the books. Each child is given a passport with the book to encourage reading and collecting stamps as Hug-A-Bug travels around the world.

Are you currently working on other books?
I just completed the illustrations for Hug-A-Bug Travels to Greece with my co-partner, Nicole Taylor and am currently working on the fourth book in the series.
