Meet April Marcom, Author of Good vs. Evil High
Picture
During the day, April Marcom works as a substitute teacher for grades K-12. But in the evening, the alluring world of romance takes over as she pours it out on paper. Her favorite thing to do, though, is to spend time with her sports-car-loving husband and three incredibly energetic children. She also loves chocolate, her five very rowdy dogs, and livin’ the simple life out in the country. April grew up a southern bell in Mississippi, but is now a proud Oklahoman.

BBB: What inspired you to become an author?

AM:
Myself, I guess. I've just always loved being able to create my own little world, full of the people and places I imagine. It's fun to decide exactly what happens in a book. Not everyone gets to do that.

BBB: How did you come with the idea for Good vs. Evil High?

AM: I
think I was watching a show called "Tower Prep" years ago (It's a show where kids with super abilities are taken to a secret boarding school) and the idea popped in my head of an extraordinary kid suddenly being bombarded by students from 2 opposing secret schools that are both trying to recruit him or her. This remained untouched on my list of random story ideas for at least a year before it evolved into the idea of heroic selfless kids being recruited to one of the schools in my story and the most devious troublemakers being recruited to its rival school. And I can't write a story without romance, so there's plenty of that in there too.

BBB: Tell us about your main character.

AM
: Kristine Fayre's a 15 year old who risks her life to rescue the youngest girls in her orphanage from a raging fire. That' what leads to her recruitment into North Haven High School (the 'good high school'). Here she finds Luke Knight, a boy she grew up with but was stripped away from when her mother died. Somewhere in his deep suffering over their sudden and cruel separation, he's become one of the elite rogues that attend Southland Cinder High School (the 'evil high school'). Kristine finds herself strangely spellbound by the sinfully sexy young man he's become, almost as powerfully as he is by her. My two main characters struggle and risk everything, including their own lives, to be together in Good vs. Evil High.

BBB: Do you ever get writer's block?

AM:
Sometimes. When it happens, I usually stop writing and do something routine--washing dishes, playing with my kids, taking a walk--and let what I've written so far play out in my head until I get a rush of ideas for what should happen next. Works every time.

BBB: What are you currently working on?

AM:
I'm just starting an upper middle grade supernatural story about a girl who's positively full of wishes. When she finds a mysterious wishing well behind her apartment complex she wishes with all her heart for a crazy unbelievable romance. A great whooshing sound and a blaze of light deliver to her a boy named Troy, 1/2 human-1/2 something else. Now she's got the ghost of his mother hanging around and a strange letter accepting her to a nearby boarding school she hasn't even applied to but might hold the answers to all her questions about Troy and the inhuman father his mother refuses to discuss. It's a work in progress, so we'll see where it goes.
