Meet Daniel Peyton, Author of Legacy of the Dragonwand
BBB: What inspired you to become an author?
DP: I have always enjoyed creating stories. Mom got me reading at an early age and encouraged my love of Science Fiction and Fantasy. In the fourth grade my teacher gave us writing time and that's what really set me off. I have been writing in some form ever since then.
DP: Several inspirations come to mind. I have often told the story about how that I wanted to write a short story for a contest someone was holding. The story had to be less than 10,000 words, I blew beyond that quickly and decided to keep going and find out when the story would find it's ending. That's a fun story, however there is more. Months prior to the contest I was at Dollywood during their crafters festival. I met a man there that made artisan bubble wands. Using metals, marbles, and wood he would craft some beautiful bubble wands. I found one that was an experiment of his that looked very unique. When I saw it I knew that it would make a neat wand for a fantasy story. I told him that I would write it one day and bought the wand right there. As I sat looking around my inspiration room for ideas to write the short story my eyes fell upon that wand and I knew that I could use it to create a fantasy adventure. The story took turns and twists that were bigger than I imagined, but that wand plays a part from start to finish.
BBB: Tell us about your main character.
DP: The main character in Legacy of the Dragonwand is a young man named Markus. He is almost 16 years old and ready for his future. In the land of Gallenor when a child turns 16 he or she is allowed to choose where they go to school for their future job. Markus was born with magical abilities and wants to explore them at the college for wizardry. However his parents have discouraged this most of his life. Now that he can make the choice with or without their approval the story begins where he sets off to go to school. Instead of getting to school he ends up on a quest to locate the legendary Dragonwand before evil forces get to it. He meets a young girl his own age who is also a wizard. She and her adopted parents join him in this journey.
