She is a poet and writer that has authored two books entitled Perfectly Imperfect and Heaven Rain on Me… So I can be and maintains a blog called Daily Life Journeys and carries the Blog name Darkskinisbeautiful”. The name was born through her challenges and struggles with being taunted for her dark skin. The same skin she has come to love and embrace.

SM: The motivation for writing this book’s foundation is based on the silenced voices and thoughts of an abuse victim through poetry and the author’s recollection of her personal experience with domestic violence. I was inspired to write this book because poetry was a tool that I used to help me during my recovery. I also felt that by sharing my story it would encourage other victims to remove themselves from their abusive situations. The funds for the book were obtained through a kickstarter project that failed. Many people didn’t want to put their funds online and instead decided to give to the cause. The books will be donated to some domestic violence shelters and is available for purchase for those who are interested at http://www.amazon.com/Perfectly-Imperfect-Moving-above-beyond/dp/1502729520/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1453327605&sr=1-1&keywords=sonya+mckinzie.
Heaven Rain on me is also available for purchase through Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/1600475361/ref=sr_1_5_twi_pap_1_olp?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1453327605&sr=1-5&keywords=sonya+mckinzie.
Or both books can be purchased directly through me.
BBB: What other books have you written?
SM: My first book titled Heaven Rain On Me, is a memoir of my personal life experience. It highlights highs and lows of my life. It discusses periods when I was told by numerous healthcare professionals that I would not be able to conceive and in 2010 I found out that I was pregnant. I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The book also shares that I was raised in a single parent home and was a product of an abusive household and somehow that affected my future views of how a woman should be treated.
BBB: How did you come up with the idea for your book cover?
SM: The idea for my book cover was born from a combination of the color “Purple” which signifies the fight against domestic abuse and the green leaves are a sentiment dedicated to my mother as her favorite color is green and the leaves are symbol of changes.
BBB: What are you currently working on?
SM: I am currently working on a poetry book and a romance novel. I wanted to take an opportunity to try my hand at writing about love. I am also working on a project to go out, speak at domestic violence shelters to the residents, and donate my book Perfectly Imperfect to the attendees.
