Synopsis: An eyeless body. A menacing stranger. And a tangled mystery. It’s the summer of 1923 and two cousins hunting for hidden gold stumble on an decayed body. Fourteen-year-old Tom Wallace is convinced the death was murder and drags his older cousin into a harrowing struggle against a shadowy group. Not even attempts on their lives can stop the boys from relentlessly pursuing the mystery. But when their curiosity leads them to investigate a derelict barge, what they find is bigger and more dangerous than anything they could have imagined. A STAIRWAY TO DANGER is a fun-filled thriller with humor and adventure in a Twain-like setting.
A Stairway to Danger is an electrifying mystery brimming with dangerous secrets, gripping action, and a frightening stranger that will hypnotize readers to the end.
Will and Tom are hunting for hidden gold, but what they find instead is a dead body. Now, the strange barge that appeared in the river is even more mysterious and the boys are certain it has something to do with the dead body they discovered. The sheriff is no help and someone seems to be spying on them. The boys are determined to get to the bottom of this, but their meddling could lead to their demise.
Filled with twists and turns, A Stairway to Danger is a well written thriller that will appeal to young adult readers. The story is set in the 1920's and Will and Tom's antics reminded me of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I loved that Tom was an avid reader and referenced many books when relaying his plans, to uncover the barge's secrets, to Will. I also like that only snippets of Tom's dark past are brought to life, compelling readers to grab the next book. A Stairway to Danger is an all around sensational read.
