Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/17) is in its fourth year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators. Despite census data that shows 37% of the US population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. Using the Multicultural Children’s Book Day holiday, the MCBD Team is on a mission to change all of that. Current Sponsors: MCBD 2017 is honored to have some amazing Sponsors on board. Smith often gets his inspiration to write from traveling and exploring remote regions. About the Illustrators: Angela Alvarenga & Jonathan E. GoleyAngela Alvarenga is an illustrtor from a quiet desert town in California. She received her Bachelors in Fine Art from the California State University of Fullerton. When she is not working in her studio, she can most likely be found outdoors doing plein air painting or sketching. It Starts with a Raindrop is her picture book debut. Jonathon E. Goley (1953 - 2015) illustrated hundreds of celebrated works for major television shows and feature films for over 30 years. His notable television series and animated movie credits include Dora the Explorer, The Addams Family, The Smurfs, Tom and Jerry, The Flintstone Kids, The Pagemaster, Ferngully the Last Rainforest, and The Jetsons. My Review![]() It Starts with a Raindrop is an educational story that teaches young children about the water cycle in a simple and captivating manner. One of my favorite aspects of the book is that it is written in lovely verse. Studies show that rhyme can improve reading skills and help children detect the phonetic constituents of words. This, together with the lessons on the water cycle and the English/Spanish text make It Starts with a Raindrop a delightful and beautiful multicultural read. The amazing illustrations are done in soft colors and are wonderfully detailed which add to the story's charm. I highly recommend picking up a copy of It Starts with a Raindrop. Perfect for classroom and home libraries. Raindrop Collage![]() 1. Draw a large water drop on white construction paper. 2. Children (with adult help) will need to cut all sorts of blue art from magazines 3. Use glue sticks to overlap all the pieces on the white raindrop, with lighter colors on left and darker on the right. 4. When complete, cut out the drop for smooth edges.
