Footballers and Louboutins FAQs

Will you write more books featuring Belles and Kirk?

Yes I plan for there to be another part to Footballers and Louboutins. It is going to carry on right from where part 1 finished.  It is going to be called Babies and Louboutins.

Will Ryan Phillips be making an appearance?

Of course he will be making an appearance. Belles and Kirk are not just going to live happily ever after there are going to be some complications. I wanted book one to end with them getting their happily ever after and I purposely didn’t mention Ryan once Belles made her escape from him. It is in book 2 that they meet again.

If the book was made into a movie who do you think would play Belles?

I think it would be good if the actress that played Belles was a new, up and coming actress. I think then people would know the character as Belles instead of whatever famous actress it was.

How long did it take you to write Footballers and Louboutins?

It took me over a year. As a working Mum I just wrote when I had a minute or two.

Are your characters based on real people?

No Footballers and Louboutins is fiction and all my characters are fictional too.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Yes, well not just for writers, but for everyone that has a dream. Never give up! My dream has always been to write and getting my book published as been a dream come true. Anyone that has a dream should follow it!

About the Book

Title: Things Are Not What They Seem | Authors: Anne Rothman-Hicks and Kenneth Hicks | Publication Date: April 9, 2014 | Publisher: MuseItUp Publishing | Pages: 268 | Recommended Ages: 10+

Summary: What would you do if you were sitting on a park bench, minding your own business, and one of those annoying pigeons suddenly started to talk to you? And what if the pigeon didn’t just talk to you – in a meticulous British accent, no less – but pleaded with you to help untangle a piece of string that had accidentally attached his leg to a wrought iron fence surrounding the playground? And what if, while you are still convinced that this is all a big nasty trick, a hawk swoops down out of the sky and starts cursing at you, also in the King’s English, for getting in his way when he wanted to execute the pigeon?

That is the quandary in which Jennifer (almost 13 years old and probably a bit too smart for her own good) finds herself one sweltering July morning while babysitting her 11-year-old (very precocious) brother James and his mopey, allergy-prone friend Sleepy. She soon learns that the bird is actually a man named Arthur Whitehair, a 19th-century Englishman who had been turned into an eternally-lived pigeon by misreading an ancient spell that was supposed to give him eternal life as a human. Likewise, an unscrupulous colleague of his, named Malman, had been turned into a hawk by Whitehair’s blunder. After years of searching, Whitehair claims (half-truthfully) that Malman has found him hiding in Central Park and is now out for revenge. On top of all this strange business, Jennifer has recently begun having weird dreams in which a crazy-looking man with curly red hair speaks cryptic phrases in Latin. Are they random phrases, or messages? And why would some sketchy guy be sending her messages in her dreams?

My Review

Picture
Things Are Not What They Seem is a captivating adventure that takes readers on an exciting adventure through Central Park as the characters try to undo an ancient spell and thwart and evil plan before it's too late.

Jennifer and her brother James are spending the day in Central Park. As James plays with his friend Jennifer watches from a park bench. A seemingly average day takes a turn when a pigeon begs Jennifer for help. She's convinced it's some sort of joke designed to make her look like a fool, but the annoying bird just won't quit. Against her better judgment she interacts with the bird and this is when things get really weird. Jennifer and James learn that the bird's name is Arthur. Whitehair and that he is actually a man transformed by a spell gone wrong. But, there's no time to chat as his arch enemy, also transformed by the spell, swoops down in an attempt to capture Arthur. This coupled with the odd dreams Jennifer has been having are almost more than the kids can take, but Arthur won't give up. Can Jennifer and James find a way to reverse the spell and make things right?

This imaginative fun-filled tale is well-written and brimming with excitement. There is also a lesson to be learned and I like how the authors use Jennifer to set a good example for readers. Jennifer displays kindness to those around her and struggles with helping Arthur because at times it causes her to deceive her parents. She reminds us, through her thoughts, that trust is something difficult to mend once broken and her heart aches when she sees the disappointment in her parents' eyes. Arthur starts out with selfish motives, but through Jennifer he rediscovers the person he used to be and yearns to make things right.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and read it in one day, as it was difficult to put down. I highly recommend picking up a copy.

“What a sweet, interesting, and overall wonderful book! I love the interesting, multi-layered, realistic characters, the numerous, unexpected but extremely interesting plot twists, and the use of Latin phrases to enhance the magic. I love the simple, yet powerful message that was woven throughout- that things are not what they seem- even in the rough, harsh world of New York City. That message strongly resonates for kids, teenagers, adults, and anyone in between. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who reads this review!! ” ~ 5 Stars, Pat D., Amazon

As Gabby's world crashes down on her, she's forced to face the realities of life, death, grief, and love. How will she survive without the friendship that's written in the stars?

My Review

Beyond Vica is emotionally moving and simply amazing. It is a poignant and heartfelt story of a friendship so strong it is "written in the stars."

Gaby, Brody, and Sam have been best friends since they were five and even as they enter high school their bond remains strong. The three have a secret constellation that tells the tale of their friendship. They call it  Vica. As Sam is fighting stage 3 cancer, the constellation means more than ever. Gaby struggles with the knowledge that Sam's life is coming to an end and finds she needs Brody more than ever, but is there more than just a friendship developing?  Gaby must accept fate, open her heart to love and learn to let go.

I was absolutely taken by this story. T.C. Booth does an incredible job of taking readers on a meaningful journey of life and death. Eloquently written, Beyond Vica will make you laugh and cry, but most importantly it will touch your heart and open your eyes to what really matters.

I highly recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

My Review

Picture
When I Grow Up I Want To Be...in the U.S. Army is a fascinating glimpse at what it's like to be in the U.S. Army.

Jake's teacher poses a thought-provoking question when she asks the class what they want to be when they grow up. Jake's classmates have many ideas, but Jake's not so sure. He could be a firefighter, secret agent, solider, or even the president. The possibilities are endless. After talking with his dad, Jake decides he wants to learn more about being a soldier so his quest to discover more about the U.S. Army begins.

This is such a great story. It highlights many important aspects of the U.S. Army such as the different ranks, weapons, and duties of the servicemen. One of the best parts of the story are the illustrations. Real photos are used alongside the drawn illustrations which help young readers get a better understanding of the U.S. Army. There are also text boxes with historical and present day information that instills learning. This is a well written, all around good read for children.

I highly recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

Fearless Joe Dearborne by Lisa Whitney Mitchell

About the Book

Title: Fearless Joe Dearborne | Author: Lisa Whitney Mitchell | Publication Date: July 11, 2014 | Publisher: Independent | Pages: 198 | Recommended Ages: 8+ Summary: Some might say he’s courageous, while others would say he’s daring, maybe even a little crazy. But when Joe Dearborne risked his life and ran into a burning building to save a puppy, the local newspaper referred to him as “fearless”—and that’s a pretty big title for a sixth-grader to live up to.
Plus, Joe already has plenty else to worry about. After other daring feats in the past, Joe promised his father he wouldn’t do anything dangerous again, and, alas, he’s just broken that promise. But whatever trouble he expects to get into with his father, and despite the dangers he’s triumphed over in the past, nothing could prepare Joe for what he’s about to encounter when a cold, bitterness creeps into his home. A mysterious and peculiar woman named Mrs. Chill has just been hired to care for Joe while his father is away on business. In no time, however, Joe discovers that she’s up to more than cooking and cleaning, and she has plans to destroy his family. Joe’s effort to save them results in perilous, sometimes humorous, encounters, and leads him on a journey through the threatening wilderness where he faces his greatest challenge yet.

The Buzz About the Book

Be sure to check out the Book Review Blitz Wrap-Up for Fearless Joe Dearborne were you can read excerpts from the 40+ reviews generated through the blitz. Here are some of the things reviewers had to say about Fearless Joe Dearborne:

Leigh Shearin: "Children from age 8-12 should love this story. It is full of suspense and excitement, but also provides well-disguised learning opportunities, which should please parents as well. I simply can't say enough good things about this wonderful debut novel. Lisa Whitney Mitchell has come out fearlessly, treating us all to what could become an iconic novel!"

Heart of a Philanthropist: "This reader was impressed with how many subplots are in Fearless Joe Dearborne. It is a short easy read. The book can easily be finished in just a few reading sessions. If you are looking for a good mystery embedded with humor, this book is for you! Recommended for 9-13 year old readers."

Identity Discovery: "I thought this was a fantastic book. Each chapter starts with a word being defined and then the word is used within the chapter. I absolutely love this aspect. It not only is an entertaining story, but it helps kids to learn new words and how to use them. The character development really showed Joe's transformation. I loved it."

Christy's Cozy Corners: "There is so much to love about this book...The storyline, setting, characters and pacing make this a great book for your kids to read alone or with you. I know I enjoyed it, so I recommend reading it with your child. I highly recommend it!"

1:25 am Reviews: "I read this entire book in one sitting. I just couldn't bear to put it down because there was never a dull moment!!"

BeachBoundBooks: "This is such a fantastic story. There is so much going on to keep children entertained throughout the book... The story teaches children about character and believing in yourself."

Bookworm for Kids: "Of course, I'm always a fan of shorter adventures. The 135 pages invites even hesitant readers to take a peek and get swept away in the fun. In other words, I can recommend this to boys and girls who love adventure, a few chills and tons of fun thrown in."

Sunshine, Bubbles and Books: "One of the strongest points of this book is how it shows the difference between being brave and being fearless. Often books portray recklessness as a positive trait... as a mother, I love that this paints it in a more realistic light. That there are consequences to actions."

A Leisure Moment: "This story is filled with adventure and mystery which can be inferred through the book cover... The attention to detail, along with the description of events really creates an atmosphere of a great story that upper elementary/middle level students will truly enjoy!"
