How to Catch a Cold
How to Fight a Cold
~Written by Adam T. Newman
~Illustrated by Susan G. Young

Book Synopsis

Kids from preschool through second grade will LOVE this silly story about a young boy whose vivid imagination goes into overdrive as he wonders why his classmates aren’t showing up to school each day. He eventually discovers they are not being taken or in harm's way but rather they just caught a COLD. Uncertain what a COLD actually is, our hero sets out on an adventure to literally catch a COLD. Will he succeed? Will he actually catch a COLD? Anyone who has ever been in a classroom where students start getting sick should know the answer to that question.

Book Synopsis

A young boy with a COLD stays home to rest and feel better when he suddenly gets sucked into a strange world where he is coached by a “freshly picked” trainer named Boogie, who then teaches him how to fight a tough COLD. Will Boogie’s training be enough for our hero to defeat the big and mighty COLD? With determination, good instruction and a spoonful of luck, our hero may just have a chance.

Book Review

How to Catch a Cold and How to Fight a Cold are delightfully humorous tales of a little boy's literal perception of common everyday terms.

In How to Catch a Cold a little boy wonders why so many of his classmates are missing from school. His imagination gets the best of him and he believes they are being held captive by an angry mole or were poisoned by a witch, but when he learns they have all "caught a cold" he sets out to do the same thing.

Due to the success of his previous mission in the first book, the little boy's saga continues when he finds himself sick in bed with instructions from his mom to "fight the cold." And so, in How to Fight a Cold, his new quest begins.

Told in rhyme, I found each of these stories to be cleverly written and highly entertaining. Young readers will get a kick out of the main character's creative cold finding and fighting outfits and his methods will make them laugh. I also, enjoyed the bold and detailed illustrations which add to the comical nature of each book. These books are sure to become some of your preschooler's favorites.

I highly recommend picking up How to Catch a Cold and How to Fight a Cold. Available on Amazon.

The Buzz About the Noah Zarc Books

Book 1: "Pease's strength as a storyteller lies in his ability to connect multiple time periods imaginatively, as well as Noah's excited, fast-paced narration." ~ Publishers Weekly

Book 1: "If I had read this book at age 10, I think it would have made me love SF just as much as reading Asimov did. If you like the non-stop action and humor of Rick Riordan's Olympians books, I think you'll also like Noah Zarc." ~ Sher A. Hart, book blogger and author

About the Author: D. Robert Pease

D. Robert Pease

D. Robert Pease
has been interested in creating worlds since childhood. From building in the sandbox behind his house, to drawing fantastical worlds with paper and pencil, there has hardly been a time he hasn't been off on some adventure in his mind, to the dismay of parents and teachers alike. Also, since the moment he could read, books have consumed vast swaths of his life. From The Mouse and the Motorcycle, to The Lord of the Rings, worlds just beyond reality have called to him like Homer's Sirens. It's not surprising then he chose to write stories of his own. Each filled with worlds just beyond reach, but close enough we can all catch a glimpse of ourselves in the characters he brings to life.

About the Book

Title: Fireflies
Author: PS Bartlett
Release Day: April 3th, 2013
Genre: Historical Fiction/Paranormal/Historical Irish Fiction

Summary: However peculiar Ennis Whelan has been for the first six years of his life, not until the day he found the bird, did the degree of his strangeness become so tangible.

Dr. Owen Whelan and his wife Sarah, both Irish immigrants, have been living the American dream, as well as raising seven bright and expressive children. Their youngest Ennis, however, has since birth, been a bit of a mystery.

Ennis was always small, meek and frightfully odd but there is so much more to him than anyone could have imagined. His sister Teagan grows increasingly suspicious of his behavior but their mother dismisses her claims, until the day he starts healing people.

When Ennis ultimately reveals the gift of sight, he questions his father about visions of his past, including his voyage to America in 1844. Owen prayed he’d never have to share those tragic memories but he will share them, when he realizes he has no choice. Ennis’ life may depend on it.

My Review of Fireflies

Fireflies
is a beautifully written thought-provoking story that stirs your emotions and warms your heart.

Ennis is a very special little boy, with an equally special gift, a gift in which his family finds difficult to comprehend. A wounded bird that flies away, a badly cut hand suddenly healed, and a vanishing venomous snake bite are just a few of the phenomenons that occur when Ennis is around.

Set in the late 1800's, Sarah and Owen Whelan are loving parents who live in a small town with their seven children, the youngest of whom is Ennis. Owen Whelan, is the town doctor and highly respected by everyone, so when Ennis repeatedly exhibits a remarkable ability that is not easily explained Owen decides to prohibit the family from speaking about it. As miracles continue to happen, Owen ultimately seeks advice from their pastor. Can the family ever come to terms with the unique and miraculous gift that seems to surround Ennis?

P.S. Bartlett creates an appealing historical fiction novel with well developed and easily likable characters. Her use of flashbacks effectively give readers a glimpse of her characters' past allowing readers to better understand the direction their lives have taken. The story is eloquently written with vivid details that easily captivate readers and leave them longing for more.

Fireflies  invokes feelings of a gentle love inspired by an innocent little boy. I highly recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

Savior Book Review

Savior
~Written by Anthony Caplan
Picture
Book Synopsis

A father and son stumble into the secret world of the Santos Muertos, a crime cartel bent on global domination. The son must find his father and keep the secret of the ancient Mayan code underlying the creation of matter in the universe from falling into the wrong hands.

A story of sacrifice and love.

Book Review

Savior is a riveting thriller that leaves death and destruction in its wake. Yet, within all the anger and cruelty there is tenderness and sacrifice.

Al and his teenage son, Ricky decide to take a South American vacation to honor the passing of Ricky's mother. Al spends this time trying to reconnect with his son, but when Ricky uncovers an old Mayan tablet father and son are catapulted into a crime world with a sinister plan. After a violent attack, Al sacrifices himself in order to safe his son and is captured by the Santos Muertos. Ricky knows the importance of the tablet and will stop at nothing to protect it, but who will protect him?

Savior is told in a matter of fact way, lacking the fluff of descriptive language, which seems to work well for the story. This tone effectively conveys the strained relationship between Ricky and Al, the methodical thinking of the Santos Muertos, and the, often times, irrational thinking of a teenager. The story keeps a quick pace with danger lurking around every corner, arousing a reader's attention and making it difficult to put the book down.

Savior is a story of love, friendship, and coming of age,  filled with thought-provoking action and intrigue.  There is something in this story for everyone and I recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

My Review

Phantom Dreams is a chilling tale of a vicious killer and a woman whose dreams are haunted by the cruel murders of beautiful young woman. Will she be next?

Kathy is a busy executive experiencing mounting stress, no personal life,  and her father's ill healthy only compounds her struggles. If that wasn't enough for one person to deal with, Kathy has been having violent dreams that always result in the death of a woman. When Kathy recognizes the women from her dreams on the news she tries to help the police, but then she becomes a suspect. Can the FBI catch the real killer before it's too late?

Phantom Dreams is an eerily captivating thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat, yet keep you yearning for more. T.K. Harris is a talented writer and her ability to hook and reel in readers is evident from the chilling opening scene. The story is filled with many twists and leaves readers unsure of what's coming next. The surprising outcome is perfect for this supernatural mystery.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Phantom Dreams. Available on Amazon.

ANNE OF CLEVES (SYNOPSIS):

It is winter 1539. King Henry VIII is galloping through the night to Rochester to meet a young woman. Just arrived in England from Germany, Anne of Cleves is destined to become his fourth wife. He has never met her before. He has only seen her portrait – the portrait of a sweet, demure and innocent young woman. The impatient and lovesick king must see her before their marriage. But this rushed and unplanned rendezvous will shock them and the country both. It will also lead to some completely unexpected and fatal results.

In D. Lawrence-Young’s well-researched novel, we learn of the strong passions and the deadly politics when the romantic plans of a frustrated Tudor king go badly wrong.

My Review of Anne of Cleves

Anne of Cleves is the compelling novel of King Henry the VIII fourth wife, who just happens to be one who escapes the marriage with her head in tact and a generous settlement from the King.

In an attempt to ensure the success of his lineage to the throne, King Henry the VIII desires to have a house full of sons. After giving birth to a son, his wife Jane Seymour dies and Henry must marry again. He puts his trusted advisers to work in search of the next Queen of England. They discover Anne of Cleves and send an artist to paint a portrait of her. Convinced she is the perfect woman for him, King Henry the VIII has the marriage arranged and Anne's life changes forever. But, when the King finally meets her face to face he is disgusted and seeks to have the marriage ended as quickly as possible. What will become of Anne of Cleves?

Anne of Cleves is a fascinating account of the violent reign of Henry the VIII and his disregard for human life. D. Lawrence Young did a remarkable job in researching his book, which is evident on every page. The riveting story flows easily and is an all around satisfying read.

Anne of Cleves is indeed "Henry's luckiest wife" and I highly recommend picking up a copy.

CATHERINE HOWARD (SYNOPSIS):

This historical novel has it all: sex and romance, violence and war, infidelity and intrigue.

Catherine Howard, the Duke of Norfolk’s niece, is raised in the very free atmosphere of her grandmother’s palace. Here she becomes aware of her own sexuality and the exciting effect she has on the men at court around her. She is also an unknowing part of her uncle’s devious plan to obtain more influence with the king - he pushes her onto the newly-divorced and lovesick King Henry VIII who is looking for a fifth wife.

Meanwhile, John Butcher has become a guard in the dreaded Tower of London. He guards the king, witnesses the executions of Anne Boleyn and Thomas More and takes part in the fighting in Ireland. However, when he returns to London, his meeting with Catherine Howard, the king’s fifth queen, produces unexpected and dramatic results.

In D. Lawrence-Young’s second Tudor novel we learn how Catherine Howard’s passionate nature mixed with the murky, deadly politics of the Tudor court and a furious king produce a classic story of passionate love, disappointment and revenge on a royal scale.

About the Author: D. Lawrence Young

D. Lawrence-Young takes the often pompous and frequently silly “Shakespeare Authorship Controversy” and turns it into a fast-paced page-turning detective story. All the nooks and crannies of rival candidates and claims are traversed in interesting locations and often funny encounters. The SAC has got under the Shakespeare-loving and teaching David Young’s skin and he has turned this irritant into a pleasure to read and from which there is much to learn.

CAUTION! Violet lives within the pages of this book. And her purple spreads to everything she touches …

Violet lives behind garden walls. Is she magical? Is she the devil’s child—or simply cursed? When the lonely thirteen-year-old embarks on a dangerous journey to find the one boy that dared to befriend her, she travels at night … in the dark … to keep people from seeing her purple skin. But no one is more surprised than Violet when she unlocks her mysterious gift.

Go where adventure, discovery and magic meet! Although this fun read captures the imagination of middle grade readers, discrimination is at the core of the novel … but so are possibilities, and they appear everywhere.

Book Review

The Purple Girl is the magical story of a little girl named Violet whose triumphant journey to be herself is brought to life on the pages within.

One night a very special girl was born. Her parents named her Violet, to match the color of her skin. To the world Violet's uniqueness was viewed as a curse and in order to keep her safe her parents raised her behind the garden walls of their home. Violet longs to be "normal" in order to be accepted by others, often overlooking the gifts she has to offer. But, when a young boy climbs the garden wall and befriends her, her life takes a remarkable turn.

The Purple Girl shares a child's need to fit in, but teaches the importance of not compromising who you truly are. The story reminded me of the quote by Dr. Seuss "Why fit in when you were born to stand out." Violet struggles with the desire to be accepted and it isn't until she meets a boy who sees who she is on the inside that she realizes her life has a purpose.

I cannot give this book enough praise. It is very well written and captures your attention from the start. I felt myself being pulled into Violet's struggle for acceptance. Even though I know people should always be allowed to be themselves, I was able to identify with her need to fit in and felt conflicted. But, I am happy to say that in the end, which is a surprise in itself, Violet makes the right choice.

My 10 year old daughter absolutely loved this story. I told her she could read it after my review, but she promised if I let her read it first she would read it quickly. She was so captivated with The Purple Girl that she read it within a few hours. She said she it was one of the best books she has ever read and gives it five stars!

I second her decision and highly recommend picking up a copy of The Purple Girl. Available on Amazon.
