Title: Safe & Sound
Author: T.S. Krupa
Genre: Literary Fiction, Romance
Number of Pages: 313

Synopsis: When Jill met Jay Greenfield she knew she had found her forever love. She was a kindergarten teacher, he was a high-powered attorney and their lives were perfect. But when a tragic accident takes Jay’s life, this young bride is left to pick up the pieces.

Jill finds herself a young widow facing multiple decisions she thought she had a lifetime to decide. With support from her childhood best friends, Lanie and Stella, Jill attempts to piece her life back together. With nightmares plaguing her dreams and the struggles of constant grief over Jay’s passing, Stella and Lanie keep near constant vigilance over her.

In the process of settling the estate, Jill learns that her husband was not quite the man she thought he was. She finds herself transported to the small beach town of Oak Island, North Carolina. But the fairy tale ending she envisioned no longer exists. She must face the reality that Jay is gone as she finds herself having a chance at love one more time.

Safe and Sound follows a yearlong journey of love, loss, friendship, and conquering the unexpected.

Safe & Sound is a heartfelt story about love, loss, and second chances. This year long journey of self discovery inspires readers to always have hope, even in the bleakest of times.

When Jill's husband, Jay,  is hit and killed by a drunk driver her whole world is turned upside down and she loses all zest for life. Her friends, Stella and Lanie, are very concerned and keep constant vigil. As the months since Jay's death pass, Jill slowly begins to put the pieces of her life back together, but what she really needs is a fresh start. After meeting with an attorney to settle Jay's estate, Jill discovers that Jay has left her more than she could have ever dreamed possible. Jay's deep love for his wife goes beyond the grave and his quest to take care of her gives her exactly what she needs, a second chance.

Safe & Sound is an emotional roller coaster that captures your heart, brings tears to your eyes and eventually a smile to your face. The characters are well developed and readers will feel a sense of closeness to Jill and all that she has to overcome. Readers will equally enjoy Jill's caring friends, Lanie and Stella. Stella adds a lightheartedness to an otherwise trying time and Lanie gives insight into the struggles Jill faces. Safe & Sound is an all around well written enjoyable read. I was so engulfed in the characters lives that I was sorry the story had to end.

I highly recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

Title: Fall From Grace: The Scribing of Ishitar
Author: Carrie F. Shepherd
Genre: Epic Fantasy Adventure
Length: 490 pages
Release Date: April 2014
Imprint: Mythos Press

Synopsis: Ishitar is born on the cusp of a great war between the two ruling Gods of the Heavens and Hells Realms. With his father in control of a repressive society and his mother fighting for free will for all, he believes the game that they play to be just that: a game. Little does he know that the players that he sees are not necessarily the ones who will influence the outcome.

Carrie F. Shepherd talks about the dreaded negative review...

Every author understands the value of a five star review.  This is the kind of review that drives up the potential that readers who read the review will take interest and buy a copy themselves.  Yet, not every book is made for every reader.  Most are written in a specific genre and targeted to an even more specific market.  Someone who doesn’t generally read the type of book you’ve written might pick it up based on the review and realize that the content of the work is simply not to their taste.  When that happens, you may just open your Amazon or Goodreads.com review page and find that you’ve just received a less than perfect, or even negative, review.

The first time I received such a review it was from a reader who is an avid follower of George R. R. Martin’s Song of Fire and Ice series.  Luckily he had sent me an email to my author’s account rather than posting it online, as both of my novels encourage feedback from my readers and provide them with this information.  This gave me the time I desperately needed to process the humiliation of receiving my first a less than perfect review in the privacy of my own home.

Upon initially reading the review, I was devastated.  Being a George R. R. Martin fan, myself, I was struck with horror that he negatively compared the body of my work with that of a favored author.   His critics were that I had too many characters that took too long to develop, that the story was full of spiteful, longstanding rivalries and petty revenge and that the relationships between some of the characters were immoral.    The review ended with his opinion that only one author can have a plot that involves a multitude of characters in any feasibly sound way and that one author was the talented Mr. Martin.

Fortunately, I was frank enough with myself to understand that, although both The Scribing of Ishitar and Martin’s novels were both part of the fantasy genre, my series is more deeply buried in the mythology of various religions whilst Martin’s setting is mortality and war.  Perhaps my reader was right, however, and changes needed to be made with regard to the reduction of characters and a few stories that are intricate to my series’ plot.

As I pondered this predicament, other readers sent me messages and posted reviews.  All with a universal, and very important, message:  the manner in which I have written my characters and the depth of their feelings and loyalty toward one another is what makes The Scribing of Ishitar a success.

Now bolstered, I returned to his e-mail and read it again.  This time with an eye toward what I could take from the review rather than from my initial surprise from receiving such harsh criticism.   As I did so, I came to the realization that he was comparing a cart full of apples to a bucket of fresh picked oranges.  I also realized that some of his feedback was, indeed, valuable as Fall From Grace was meant to be the base of the story in which all of the following installments were to build.   Looking at the review from that perspective, I was able to incorporate some of his comments into my writing, improving my skill so that by the time Ashes to Ashes was complete I had a fluid story with stronger characters who are solidly written.

My reader’s review has taught me the most valuable lesson I, as a writer, can learn:  read those negative reviews and take what you can from them to improve your craft.  But never take them personally, or to heart.  After all, every reader is entitled to their preferences and opinions.

The words still didn’t register, even though this had to be Tori’s fifth time saying them. She glared at her fiancé, still desperately trying to come to terms with the information her mother had blasted to everyone at the packed Thanksgiving dinner table.
“Seriously? How is that even humanly possible when you didn’t know the woman four hours ago?” Tori shouted.
“Tori, l-let me explain,” Dallas stammered.
Twelve pairs of eyes were now focused on the not-quite-blissful couple standing at the bottom of the stairs just off from the dining room.

Dwayne S. Joseph began his writing career at the age of thirteen. Commandeering his parent's computer, he sat for hours on end creating dramatic stories of fiction that earned him the "best story teller in the Joseph household" moniker. He then went on to win second place in the National Scholastic Writing Competition during his senior year in high school, for a short story he wrote, titled "Playtime" (A story that he does plan to develop into a children's tale someday soon!) The novels at thirteen and the short story in his senior year all helped to propel him on the destined path to becoming a published author at the age of 27, with the release of his first novel The Choices Men Make.

And He was just as clear when He told her that purity ring would someday be replaced with a wedding ring from the same man . . . all Pink had to do was save herself. Dreams of a life with Pastor Malik were enough to keep the privileged princess committed to her vow, dodging all kinds of temptation, resisting every romance, and the whole time, keeping her eyes on the prize –the day she would become first lady. There’s just one problem - Pastor Malik already has a wife. But Pink is accustomed to getting what she wants - by any means necessary. With her grace and virtue on the line - and what she thinks is God’s word in her head - Pink is on a mission no one understands. She’s determined to show Pastor Malik that they belong together – and come hell or high water, she plans to get the good reverend to agree. Candy Jackson has penned a page-turning tale of one-woman’s quest for love and the spiraling descent she’ll take to get it.

Maryann Jordan

I am an avid reader of romance novels, often joking that I cut my teeth on the old bodice rippers. I have been reading and reviewing for years. In 2013, I created the blog, Lost in Romance Books to promote and showcase indie authors. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head, screaming for their story to be told. From these musings, my first novel, Emma’s Home, The Fairfield Series Book 1 was born. I am a high school counselor having worked in education for thirty years. I live in Virginia, having also lived in four states and two foreign countries. I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for thirty two years and am the mother to two adult daughters. When writing, my dog or one of my four cats can generally be found in the same room if not on my lap. Please take time to leave a review of this book (on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble). Reviews are the lifeline for indie authors. Feel free to contact me, especially if you enjoyed my book. I love to hear from readers!

My Review

Noah Zarc is a highly imaginative science fiction adventure filled with amazing gadgets, incredible time travel, and of course an evil villain set on destroying it all.

Noah is living the life most 12-year-old kids dream about and his life aboard a spaceship couldn't be better. Earth is in trouble and Noah and his family are on a mission to save the creatures by bringing them to the sanctuary they have created in outer space. Things seem to be going as planned, until Noah's mom and dad fail to return from one of their time travel trips. Can Noah rescue his parents and defeat the evil mastermind with a sinister plan? You can bet he's going to try!

I love how the story is a modern day science fiction loosely based on the story of Noah's Ark. Those familiar with the bible story will pick up on the subtle similarities. Author, D. Robert Pease is genuinely gifted storyteller. His creativity easily draws readers into the story and the fast paced action captivates them.

I definitely recommend picking up a copy of Noah Zarc and adding it to your summer reading list. You will not be disappointed.

The Buzz About the Noah Zarc Books

Book 1: "Pease's strength as a storyteller lies in his ability to connect multiple time periods imaginatively, as well as Noah's excited, fast-paced narration." ~ Publishers Weekly

Book 1: "If I had read this book at age 10, I think it would have made me love SF just as much as reading Asimov did. If you like the non-stop action and humor of Rick Riordan's Olympians books, I think you'll also like Noah Zarc." ~ Sher A. Hart, book blogger and author

Book 2: "This is another great mind-bender. The wild time jump details are fabulously thought out and cause some unexpected results." ~ Michelle Isenhoff, Children's Author

Book 2: "A well-written, adventurous read for young readers and even adults, Noah Zarc blasts through space and into your imagination." ~ TKristufek, Amazon Reviewer

Book 3: "I was completely captured by the characters, the action and the issues and questions: set in fantasy but integrating concepts and engaging readers with a fun tale that teaches as it entertains." ~ Gaele, Amazon Reviewer

About the Author: D. Robert Pease

D. Robert Pease

D. Robert Pease
has been interested in creating worlds since childhood. From building in the sandbox behind his house, to drawing fantastical worlds with paper and pencil, there has hardly been a time he hasn't been off on some adventure in his mind, to the dismay of parents and teachers alike. Also, since the moment he could read, books have consumed vast swaths of his life. From The Mouse and the Motorcycle, to The Lord of the Rings, worlds just beyond reality have called to him like Homer's Sirens. It's not surprising then he chose to write stories of his own. Each filled with worlds just beyond reach, but close enough we can all catch a glimpse of ourselves in the characters he brings to life.

Author: Jessica Miller
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance
Number of Pages: 374

When she finally learns the truth of her families deepest secret, Ella has to face her demons by taking out one of the people she thought she could trust…before they kill her.

Book Review

The Wanderers is a gripping paranormal that leaves you yearning for more.

After the tragic death of her boyfriend, Ella longs to get far away from her family and the constant reminders that engulf her. She also hopes to escape the haunting dreams and the nervous feeling she has that someone is always watching her. Selecting a college in Vermont, thousands of miles from her home in California, Ella is eager for a fresh start. Finally, the nightmares have subsided and besides the obnoxious self absorbed guy, that despite her best efforts, she seems to be falling for her life is falling into place. But, all that is about to change. After one of her fellow students is murdered, Ella begins to realize things aren't quite what they seem. Will Ella discover the truth before it's too late?

The Wanderers is an intense supernatural ride with mysterious secrets and eerie characters that lurk in the shadows. One of the first things Ella notices when meeting new people are their eyes. The author uses this to cleverly create fear in readers by describing them as glowing, deep, and penetrating and always watching. The story is fast paced and riddled with one surprise after another. I recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

About the Book

Noah is excited for the chance to tour a real aircraft carrier with his Grandpa Ed, a proud Navy veteran. He is not excited that his little sister, Marina, is tagging along. Still, Noah tries to be patient. Readers chuckle and follow along as the siblings learn that each deck, each crewmember, and each piece of equipment adds another chapter to the history of the U.S. Navy and its mission to protect our country. Noah and Marina's curiosity helps introduce readers to the complex and exciting work of an aircraft carrier and how each crewmember plays a vital role in its functioning.

"A thoroughly enjoyable, readable adventure aboard a Navy flattop for any boy or girl. A fitting tribute to the U.S. Navy and to the men and women dedicated to serving our country." - Captain A. Stewart (USN Pacific Fleet, Ret.)

Book Review

When I Grow Up I Want to Be...in the U.S. Navy takes young readers on a journey inside an aircraft carrier and enlightens them on what it means to be in the U.S. Navy.

Grandpa Ed has promised to take Noah to visit the U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier that has ported in his city and Noah can't wait. While on board Noah learns all sorts of interesting facts about the carrier as well as the hard work and dedication that is expected of the men and women in the Navy. Now, Noah is certain he wants to be in the Navy when he grows up, even if his little sister joins too.

When I Grow Up I Want to Be...in the U.S. Navy is a wonderfully written, entertaining, and educational story. It teaches children about Naval history while giving them a glimpse of what it's like to work on an aircraft carrier. I really like the use of actual photos along with the illustrations which help to give children a realistic image of what they can expect to see aboard an aircraft carrier.

I recommend picking up a copy of When I Grow Up I Want to Be...in the U.S. Navy. Available on Amazon.
