About the Book

Picture
Title: Inventors & Impostors
Author: Daniel Diehl & Mark P. Donnelly
Genre: Historical Non-Fiction/Inventions
Length: 236 pages
Release Date: May 1st, 2015

Synopsis: What if everything you learned in school about the heroes of science, technology and invention was a lie?

What if Tom Edison didn’t invent the lightbulb? What if the Wright brothers weren’t the first men to fly? What if Marconi didn’t invent the radio, or Watt the steam engine, or Bell the telephone, or Henry ford the production line? What if Columbus didn’t really discover America, or Darwin the concept of evolution, or Watson and Crick the existence of DNA?

Well, brace yourself, because none of these people did what the history books credit them with having done. Were they all thieves and liars? Was it all a huge mistake? Was it some gigantic conspiracy? How did all these people become famous for things they didn’t do?

In fourteen gripping, true stories Daniel Diehl and Mark P. Donnelly dig deep into the past and lay bare the facts about who really invented what and why somebody else got the glory.

This is historical fact that reads like the best fiction – easy to read and impossible to put down.

From the Authors

There is an oft quoted truism that non-fiction writers, like teachers, collect more information than they can possibly pass on to their audience.  Never was that more the case than when we started to write our latest release ‘Inventors & Impostors: A Sordid History of Invention and Imitation’.

When we decided to write a book about the largely unknown inventors whose names have been overshadowed by those who followed in their footsteps, we thought it was a grand, fun idea.  We also thought that as historians with some little experience in the field, the project would be amazingly easy; a real breeze.  Just goes to show how wrong you can be.  Every piece of research led to another, and that one to yet another, and so on.  We simply had no idea how many commonplace things that we not only take for granted, but assume we know something about the development of, are actually the result of years, decades and sometimes centuries of one 'inventor' after another building on, and sometimes blatantly co-opting, the ideas of other people.  Many of the items that we assumed were either eighteenth or nineteenth century in origin turned out to stretch back many centuries, in some cases more than two thousand years.  Even more astounding was the geographic scope of these improbable chains of invention; things which may have originally been discovered or invented in one nation, only to be lost and forgotten, would later be rediscovered thousands of miles away in a different nation and under entirely different circumstances.  Just as often, credit for inventions were simply stolen from their originator by an unscrupulous – and far less qualified – individual who then claimed credit for another person’s work.

Much of what you will read in Inventors & Impostors may strike you as astounding, if not outright unbelievable.  Some of the people we have all been raised to believe were clever, if not brilliant, heroes of science, invention and discovery were, in fact, little better than self-promoting pirates.  Certainly this is not true in every instance, but it is often enough the case to undermine our confidence in much of what we have been taught over the course of our time in public school.

Consequently, the information contained in these pages will probably never make it into textbooks or popular history books, but the same can be said for so much of life.  The truth is often just too embarrassing to become common knowledge.  Still, as newspaper reporters say when defending their intrusive way of poking their noses into people's private lives: “the public has a right to know”.

This book may cause some controversy, it may raise some readers' ire; and that is not always a bad thing, at least if it occurs as the result of an honest search for the truth.  But most of all, we hope you enjoy reading it and, with a little luck, come away with a better understanding of the way in which many of the modern wonders which we all take for granted really came into existence.

About the Book

Picture
Title: Losing It All
Author: Marsha Cornelius
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Number of Pages: 381
Synopsis: Frank Barnes is content living on the streets of Atlanta. A soup kitchen and a makeshift shanty sure beat his days as a POW in Vietnam. But Chloe Roberts can’t handle the eviction that sends her into the hell of homelessness. With no family or friends to turn to, Chloe and her children are sucked into the traumatic world of night shelters, and dangerous predators.

When they bump into each other at the soup kitchen, Frank offers Chloe a glimmer of hope that she can pull her life back together. She rekindles his lost sense of self-worth by taking his mind off his own problems. But they will not meet again until Frank is riding high as a working man, and Chloe has hit rock bottom. By helping Chloe rebuild her broken life, Frank banishes the demons from his own past. Unfortunately, the past comes strolling back into their lives, threatening to destroy the happiness they have finally found.

My Review

Losing It All is the heart-wrenching and well contrived story of homelessness, despair, hope, and finally a chance to begin anew.

Frank is a Vietnam War Veteran like many other heroes, he lives on the streets. He figures nothing could be worse than his time spent as a POW, but he soon discovers just how violent the streets of Atlanta can be.

Chloe is also learning a thing or two about the streets after being evicted from her apartment with no where to turn and two small children to look after. She seeks refuge at the women's shelter and for the sake of her kids tries to follow the routine of day shelters, night shelters, and soup kitchens. During a visit to the soup kitchen she meets Frank. She is appalled by is haggard appearances, and although he seems helpful, Chloe shies away from him. Chloe is more determined than ever to get herself and her kids off the streets. But, just when her situation seems to be turning around devastation strikes from all directions. Now, completely hopeless Chloe is but a shell of her former self. Can she overcome the tragedy her life has become?

Meanwhile, Frank has be given a second chance and he plans to do whatever it takes to keep from screwing things up. He has a job, plenty of food, clean clothes, and shelter. It seems his life couldn't get any better so when he sees a zombie-like Chloe and her two children in front of the Roswell shelter he is compelled to help them. Chloe is resistant and it takes some coaxing to get her to bring the kids and go with him. Chloe is no longer the woman Frank remembered and he's not sure she will ever be again, but he's determined to do what he can.

Losing It All is completely captivating and utterly heartbreaking, yet it is also a testament to the power of the human spirit. Just when Frank is ready to give up a miracle puts Ray in his life and when Chloe loses all hope a miracle brings her Frank. Despite heartache, good comes to those who deserve it and that in itself left me inspired. I also have to admit that when little Ethan muttered those three little words to Frank I felt my heart leap and my eyes filled with tears.

The author effectively brings her characters to life on the pages and her ability to spin a fascinating tale shines through. I absolutely loved Losing It All and highly recommend picking up a copy.

My Review

Between the Lines is a powerfully moving novel about three girls who form an incredible bond despite the racist world around them.

On a day that was supposed to be joyous, Hattie’s 10th birthday ends up as a day of hatred and violence when the city of Detroit finds itself facing racially motivated riots. Hattie must leave the home and friends she loves in order to escape a city in upheaval. Attending public school for the first time, Hattie is certain she’ll never make any friends, but as luck would have it she meets Beverly and Crackers. The three quickly become inseparable. But, not everyone is happy about this friendship. The three girls will have to overcome the prejudice views of many, but they find strength in their friendship to fight for change.

This story is simply amazing. The characters are well developed and believable and I was inspired by Hattie, who is wise beyond her years. I love that she only sees Beverly for who she is on the inside and never notices the color of her skin. The beautiful friendship between the girls is heartening and I found it uplifting when the girls took on the challenge of finding away to make a difference. Between the Lines is an absolute must read for middle graders.

I highly recommend picking up a copy.

My Review

A Fearful Lie is the compelling story of one woman's fateful decision that ultimately turns her world upside down.

Gloria is a middle-aged housewife with two grown daughters and a loving husband, who happens to be a well respected police officer. Her life seems perfect, until the day she decides to stop at a local bar for a couple of drinks and then get behind the wheel to head home. She never even saw 3-year-old Joshua step into the road until it was too late. With no witnesses and an already deceased little boy Gloria decides to protect her 'perfect' family and drives away. This one decisions catapults her into a world of depression and alcohol abuse leaving her family life in disarray. Can Gloria come to terms with the decision she made before it destroys her life? Does she even deserve a chance at redemption?

A Fearful Lie is a well written absorbing read. I was shocked that a woman, who is a mother herself, was able to drive away from an accident that claimed the life of a little boy without thinking twice. However, justice as always prevails and Gloria ends up losing the life she adores as a result of her choice. Keeping her secret becomes a full-time job and is in itself a prison. I was completely taken by the gripping plot that was full of surprises. Although I believe that Gloria deserves the heartache she experiences based on the decision she made so many years ago, I was very pleased with the conclusion and Gloria's chance at being forgiven. A Fearful Lie is an all around captivating read.

I highly recommend picking up a copy.

Bonne Femme by AR Simmons Book Review

About the Book

Picture
Title: Bonne Femme
Author: AR Simmons
Genre: Mystery Suspense
Number of Pages: 458
Synopsis: Bonne Femme is the debut novel of AR Simmons. Ex-Marine Richard Carter betrays the woman he loves in order to save her from a former squad mate he thinks is out to kill her. Bright and intuitive Jill Belbenoit tries to decide which of the two violent men is her greater threat.

In this thriller, obsession and fear lead to a seemingly insane act before a campaign of physical intimidation and psychological terror throws an intelligent but vulnerable woman into a nightmare world which may or may not be exactly as it appears to be. The triple climax will send shivers up your spine and make you check the locks before going to bed.

Try Bonne Femme if you enjoy: Suspense novels, Psychological Crime Thrillers, Police Procedurals, Serial Killer Stories, or Romantic Suspense Stories.

My Review

Bonne Femme is a chilling thriller about a young woman who is catapulted into a violent nightmare that goes from bad to worse in the blink of an eye.

Jill Belbenoit is a college student from France. She's intelligent and focused, until that fateful day when a lack of judgement leaves her fighting for her life. Richard Carter and Mic Boyd were in the same Marine Squadron and experienced the unthinkable in Mogadishu. Richard doesn't consider Mic much of a friend, but when Richard sees that Jill is drawn to Mic he decides to tag along. Richard has had a crush on Jill since the first moment he laid eyes on her, but of course she falls for Mic. However, when things with Mic go south Jill seeks Richard's help in getting Mic to leave her alone. Richard soon learns a sickening truth about Mic and must make a rash decision that will leave Jill wondering who her real enemy is.

Bonne Femme is a frightening tale filled with horrifying crimes and danger lurking at every turn. The characters are complex and the plot disturbing, yet powerfully consuming. The author is a skilled storyteller and easily draws a reader in and keeps them on edge until the very end. Just when I thought a killer would be caught, the author would add a twist more shocking than the last. I felt the story was well organized and never short on action. I am looking forward to reading other books in this series.

I would recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

About the Author

Picture
I live in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania with my husband and a horde of white tail deer who insist on annihilating all my attempts at gardening.  We are empty-nesters with two grown daughters and two beautiful grandchildren.

Being a grandmother was the fuel that fed the fire, and I decided to leave my grandchildren a legacy of words that would outlast any other inheritance I could give.  I wanted to write wholesome stories where the characters would have to use their brains instead of computers and cell phones.  They would have  to think on their feet.  They would have to take responsibility and make decisions on their own.  And, they would just be darn good kids.  I wanted to challenge readers to read more by including titles of other books and alluding to their messages.  So it will never sell.  That’s okay.  That was not my plan.  I just wanted to hand my grandchildren books that had been written especially for them.

Emerson’s Attic opened a world of possibilities and I dove in with gusto.  The first draft of The Blue Velvet seemed too fast and easy, and of course it felt that way because it was just the very beginning.  I had, and still have, a lot to learn about writing but with the mentoring of Judith Redline Coopey, my editor, and the encouragement of friends it's coming along.

The knitting needles have slowed, the flower beds (or what’s left of them) have weeds, Emerson's dollhouse remains unfinished, and my fishing rod leans lonely in a corner of the garage, but I just can’t get enough of “Emerson,” the real one and the character. (www.kathleenandrewsdavis.com)

I have been a writer since I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse and am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It's a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves - it works wonderfully...

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. The other half of me has been transplanted to the island of New Zealand. A land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands - I shall forever remain crosseyed.

About the Book

Title: Always There
Author: Joseph Forte
Illustrator: Bob Goodall
Genre: Children's Short Story
Number of Pages: 32
Synopsis: Always There is an intriguing, empathetic story that captures the reader’s attention from the initial turn of the page. Thomas Mays is a young local from Eden. His usual Saturday morning bike ride adventures reveal the truth about the Parkside Bridge homeless man who became the town’s unfathomable hero. As his journey continues, clues are left behind and Thomas’ life is changed forever.

My Review

Always There is a touching story about a young boy whose heart is left forever changed as he experiences a vast array of human emotions that ultimately change his life.

Each day Thomas rides his bike on a path along the canal he sees a homeless man playing his harmonica. The man is always there and seems to want to interact with Thomas, but Thomas always ignores him. One day Thomas hears a reporter on TV talking about a homeless man who rescued people from the canal. He learns the man's name is Edmund and his quick thinking earn him the title of 'local hero.' Thomas decides he may have misjudged Edmund, but as he rides by the canal Edmund is no where to be found. Strange clues with complex messages are left in his place and Thomas feels the loss. Will he ever understand the valuable gift Edmund has given him?

Always There is a gentle tale that teaches children about compassion and understanding.
