About the Book

Title: Blackout
Author: Madeleine Henry
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopian
Number of Pages: 182
Summary: One wall divides life from darkness. After the worldwide Blackout, America built a concrete wall--the Frontier--across the middle of the nation to isolate its precious electricity in the top half. Everyone below the Frontier was forsaken, and now only a few survive in the grim region known as the Dark Zone.

Sixteen year old Phoenix Troublefield endures the dark with his girlfriend, Star Windsong. When America announces that it will trade electricity for immigrants, Phoenix and Star sacrifice themselves for the power that might save her younger brother. On the other side of the Frontier, they find America is not what they expected, and instead they are thrown into a shocking and deeply personal contest that threatens to destroy their love. When the chance comes to escape back into the Dark Zone, it may already be too late.

My Review

Blackout is an intense and gripping novel that takes readers on a wild ride after a worldwide blackout results in the division of America.

When unexplained events leave the the world in total darkness America realizes they don't have enough electricity to support the entire country. Without warning they construct a wall dividing America in half. Electricity is restored to the northern half leaving the southern half to fend for themselves. As a result most people living in the area known as the "Dark Zone" do not survive. Phoenix and his parents are just one of 8 families left in Dark DC. Like the other survivors, they have learned to adapt to their new life. Phoenix even falls in love with a girl named Star.  Phoenix and Star discover that America is offering to trade electricity for Dark Zone residents. In order to save Star's sick brother her and Phoenix agree to the trade. But, things aren't always as they appear and this seemingly generous offer has a hidden agenda. Can Phoenix and Star survive?

Blackout is absolutely riveting. The story is well organized and powerfully consuming. I liked the fast pace and numerous twists which kept me on edge. The book was so captivating that I read the entire story in one day. I anxiously await Book Two.

I highly recommend picking  up a copy of Blackout. Available on Amazon.

Book 1 - The Cursed Man
Soon to be a major motion picture

The Cursed Man, by Keith Rommel, tells the story of Alister Kunkle, a patient at Sunnyside Capable Care Mental Institution. Alister has been in seclusion for the last 25 years, having no contact with the staff or the outside world. The reason for this is that anyone who communicates with Alister dies within the day, for he is the Cursed Man and Death takes a professional interest in those unlucky enough to cross his path.

Believing him simply deranged, Dr Anna Lee, an up-and-coming young psychiatrist, has come to cure Alister. She is warned about Alister's past and is shown evidence of previous encounters made by the skeptical or unbelieving, all of whom died, sometimes horribly. Regardless of the stories, Anna will not be dissuaded and is reluctantly allowed access to Alister. All assume her fate is sealed, but when she returns unharmed the next day, we also start to wonder about the stories.

So begins an enthralling narrative told in the past and the present as Anna attempts to learn why Alister believes he is cursed, while at the same time trying to convince him the events were not real and that in fact he is merely ill and so can be cured. Is Alister truly followed by death or is he simply mentally ill? The Cursed Man is an extremely well-written suspense horror story... I enjoyed it immensely; right up until the very end I was never sure of the outcome... Great story-telling in the tradition of Stephen King... -- Booklore

Book 2 - The Lurking Man
A Sunbury Press bestseller

What happens after we die? Are we given choices based on how we lived our lives? It’s an age-old question pondered by just about everyone.

Author Keith Rommel dared to explore the answer by creating his newest novel The Lurking Man, a story of dark suspense that unmercifully reveals the life of a self-deluded, neglectful mother who caused irreparable damage to her family and ultimately struggles with death as much as life. It’s the second novel in his suspenseful and thrilling Thanatology series that began with the eerie, spine-tingling The Cursed Man.

“Imagine Death knowing your deepest, darkest secrets and all of your private pain,” said Rommel about The The Lurking Man. “Now imagine it wants to use what it knows against you so that you bend to its will.”

In the Lurking Man, main character Cailean stands beneath a spotlight in a blinding snowstorm. She has no idea where she is or how she got there, but she senses something moving around her in the darkness outside the light.

When the ominous presence calling himself Sariel makes himself known, he declares that he is Death Incarnate and that Cailean has died. He has taken her to the Aperture, a place between the living and the dead, where he will force her to face the sins of her past in exchange for twenty-four hours of life to try and right her wrongs. But what she must do in return for this precious time is unthinkable.

When I was asked to participate in the Chocolate Challenge, I figured what could be better than talking about two of my favorite things! I was just going to list some children's books, but decided to include some adult ones as well. I hope you enjoy my selections...

Bellyache: A Delicious Tale by Crystal Marcos
(Middle Grade)

Picture
Picture
The title of this book pretty much sums it up and after "Mounds" of candy we've all been there!

Summary: A lip-smacking, mouthwatering, absolutely delectable debut, BELLYACHE: A Delicious Tale by Crystal Marcos is a literary feast for ages seven and up. In the vein of Roald Dahl’s best-loved adventures, Marcos offers a mystical, character driven escapade that intertwines strands of reality with a larger-than-life fantasy world. When Peter Fischer sets out to help his grandfather at Papa’s Sweet Shop, he will quickly learn that sneaking sweets and covering up his sugar-dusted tracks will have major consequences. As Peter is transported to a mysteriously delicious, faraway land, a curious people known as the Candonites, some of whom have no time for a non-Candonite, will teach Peter a lesson on what it means to be different and what it means to forgive.

Phantom Dreams by T.K. Harris
(Mystery Suspense)

Picture
Picture
Loved this story, but it is certainly a chilling and suspenseful tale.

Summary: FBI Special Agent Jack Matthews finds himself on yet another serial killer case, having barely recovered from the last disastrous hunt. Still stiff from a gun shot wound in his leg, under investigation for a botched job, and having lost his fiancée when she walked out on him, Jack is beginning to wonder if it isn’t time to move on to something new. But, for Jack, these cases are personal and he can’t say no.

Marketing specialist Kathy Gilliam leads a fairly boring life. If she’s not working or caring for her ailing father, then she is doing whatever it takes to avoid going anywhere near crowds of people. Her few distractions include her friend Margo Longfellow, occasional hiking trips, and her increasingly alarming dreams of women dying.

As her nightmares cause her to begin to doubt her sanity, the media releases news of the “Coast-to-Coast Killer” and Kathy discovers her dreams may be related. In a moment of panic, Kathy does something that places her on the FBI’s “persons of interest” list. Suddenly, her life is set on a collision course with Jack who must decide if Kathy is the killer or destined to become a victim.

I'll Trade My Peanut-Butter Sandwich by Chris Robertson
(Children's Picture Book)

Picture
Picture
Growing up I ate peanut-butter sandwiches almost everyday and always enjoyed it with a delicious glass of chocolate milk.

Summary:
When a boy trades his peanut-butter sandwich, it begins a series of increasingly absurd and outrageous trades, until he finally discovers an appreciation for the simple things in life.

Doughnuts for Amy by John Malik
(Contemporary Fiction)

Picture
Picture
Yes, I know doughnuts are not technically candy, but they are covered in chocolate and besides who doesn't love a good doughnut?

Summary: Doughnuts for Amy is a romantic love story in the best tradition of modern romantic fiction. Nick St. Germaine, the Executive Chef of Woodmont, an upscale retirement community, is struggling emotionally as he approaches the second anniversary of the death of his wife, Robin. Plagued by nightmares and challenged by his son to move forward one day at a time, Nick believes he is doing that, but just barely. He takes solace in early morning workouts at his gym, long runs and even longer hours in Woodmont’s kitchen. When Woodmont goes through a sudden change in management, Nick gets a new boss, Amy Sommers, a divorced nurse with little knowledge of the Food and Beverage business. Nick is quick to show his disdain for Amy, so much so that she comes close to showing him the door her first day on the job but eventually, Amy earns his respect. As Amy begins to manage the many facets of Woodmont, she soon realizes her greatest challenge lies in the broken heart of Nick St. Germaine. When she finds the gentle, compassionate side of Nick, her affection for him grows. As Amy's attraction to Nick begins to burn, she finds herself competing for his attention with not only a beautiful physician but also a group of 80+ year-old widows. When a son of a Wodmont resident goes from troublemaker to a threat to Woodmont's security, Amy is afraid Nick may lose control at the worst possible moment. Filled with delectable food, endearing octogenarians, a few quirky cooks, World War two vets, cranky widows and of course a delicious scene in which Chef Nick makes a certain fried pastry, Doughnuts for Amy is a six course tasting menu of fork-tender romance and comedy that will have you asking “what’s for dessert?”

So those are my choices for the Chocolate Challenge. This challenge was a lot of fun and I could have gone on and on with wonderful books and their chocolate counter parts. Thanks for stopping by!

My Review

Epiphany is a thought-provoking novel that fascinates readers with it's intriguing plot and vast array of characters.

When eleven and twelve year old girls mysteriously begin showing up pregnant around the world, Doctors Sam and Dorinda Enright, along with a team of scientists, FBI, and military personnel set out to find the root cause of this enigma. However, the more they delve into the pregnancies, the more puzzling the situation becomes. One thing they are certain of is the end of civilization looms in the shadows. Will they uncover the truth before it's too late?

He also exhibits his knowledge and ingenuity by effectively creating a believable world readers are drawn to. Just when you think you have the mystery solved, another baffling discovery is made sending you right back into the unknown.

"A must have experience for young people. With its cute, intelligent looking dog, and a bird that looks like it was conceived by Dr. Seuss, it puts us into an animal society - so beautifully conceived in its civility, generosity, and interest and care for the world - that it is reminescent of books like Winnie the Pooh. These elements, set in the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, beautifully brought out by magnificent photographs and videos, make it a compelling book from both parents' and teachers' points of view. ~ Mr. Naturally, iBookstore Review

"Overall, this iBook provides a great introduction to the Grand Canyon to children who are about to visit it or who just want to learn more about this important National Park. It includes lots of beautiful photographs, the story is engaging and there is a huge wealth of information included. I found it a great opportunity to talk about the Grand Canyon with my son, and tell him about my own experiences visiting the park and hiking into the crater. I also really enjoyed learning about the California Condor and all the effort that has gone into the Recovery Program; it provided a great opportunity to talk about Endangered Species and our responsibility to help preserve them." ~ iMum

"More than just a story, the book has incredible imagery that appears to lift off the page – a true photographic journey." ~ Mom's Lifesavers

KK and Marie for websiteJPG

Would you like to live each day surrounded by unsurpassed beauty and deeply connected to nature? Marie finds it hard to believe, but this is now her lifestyle and she wants to share it through her photography and stories. Marie von Minden was born and raised in Poland. She immigrated to Canada in 1982 and in 1999 she and her husband relocated to the United States. Like many Europeans, she was overwhelmed by the vastness and the beauty of North America and she developed a passion for landscape photography. They began camping in the wilderness and connecting with nature on weekends and holidays, first in a tent and later in a cap-over camper. It was during those camping trips that a dream of full-time traveling and living in an RV evolved. In 2002 that dream became reality and they have been traveling in a 34 foot Airstream trailer ever since. America’s National Parks continue to be one of their favorite places to visit. When Kristi Kay, a Cairn Terrier, joined them, the idea of a children’s book series about America’s National Parks as seen through Kristi Kay’s eyes grew as a natural extension of their lifestyle and love of nature. Through interactive adventure stories enhanced by photography selected from her vast photographic library, animation, sounds, videos, and unique graphics Marie hopes to express her gratitude for what has become her home, and to help cultivate appreciation and stewardship of these precious resources.

Apron Strings Book Review

About the Book

Title: Apron Strings
Author: Mary Morony
Genre: Literary Fiction
Number of Pages: 253
Publication Date: March 14, 2014
Summary: When a grown-up tells you not to worry, you had better start—first rule of thumb, Sallee Mackey, age seven. She is already more than a little bit wary of the adults in her Jim Crow era, Southern world with good reason. Sallee’s mother Ginny is flat out dangerous; her father Joe is on his way out the door; and Mr. Dabney the bigoted neighbor seems to be just a little too interested with the goings on at Sallee’s house—like he knows something no one else does. The only adult to be trusted is Ethel, the family maid, who has known Sallee’s mother since Ethel and Ginny were both girls.

That complicated relationship started the day Ethel spied Ginny kissing the black stable boy years ago. While Ginny has conveniently forgotten that she even knew Ethel back then, Sallee has not as she constantly lobs questions at Ethel about her mother’s girlhood.

From Sallee’s oft times humorous and always guileless vantage, grownups have a most mixed up view of the world. What does skin color have to do with learning? Closing schools rather than have black and white children in the same classroom, what’s the sense of that?

Ethel gives her very own biased account of her shared history with Ginny while Sallee hones her vigilance and stealth, skills she and her brother and two sisters have acquired in an attempt to understand the drama that swirls around them. Rocks are thrown through windows, a car filled with angry white men shout racial slurs at the children at play and a tragic poisoning threatens the entire family’s sense of security.

When Joe Mackey asks Ethel to testify on his behalf in a custody suit, her conflicted loyalties throw the entire family into even more turmoil.

My Review

Apron Strings is a fascinating novel that is centered around the complicated life of a southern family and their maid, whom they've all come to depend on.

Sallee Mackey is an inquisitive young girl that builds a special bond with her maid and caretaker, Ethel. Ethel spends time answering all of Sallee's questions, whereas her mother is often cold and hostile towards her. Of course, when Sallee can't get answers she takes to eavesdropping.

The Mackey family loves Ethel as though she is one of the family, but many people in their neighborhood, including their next door neighbor, only see the color of Ethel's skin and judge her harshly. The children don't understand why the color of skin makes any difference and often stand up to others to defend Ethel.

Ginny Mackey is very self absorbed and her children fear her. Inevitable her marriage falls apart and she seeks custody if only to hurt their father. Sallee and her siblings are torn. They want to escape their unstable mother, but are afraid to be without Ethel. What is to become of the children and Ethel?

Apron Strings is a well thought out and effectively organized story. I was immediately drawn in and felt the same bond with Ethel as the children did. Through dialogue and setting, Mary Morony creates a beautiful and compelling story that captures your attention from beginning to end.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Apron Strings. Available on Amazon.

About the Book

Title: Hetty and the Yeti
Author: Jules Burnett
Genre: Middle-Grade Fantasy Adventure
Length: 136 pages
Release Date: May 2014
Imprint: Polliwog Press

Summary: When schoolgirl Hetty is magically transported to Tibet, high in the Himalayan Mountains, she comes face to face with the Giant Yeti!

But is the Yeti really the terrifying beast of legend? Can Hetty prevent the colossal creature from causing chaos in the city centre? And what is the connection with Hetty and the ghostly lady that haunts the Himalayan Hills?

Hetty embarks on a journey that will take her across the world, back in time and one that will change her life forever.

My Review

Hetty and the Yeti is a humorous and entertaining story about a young girl's life changing whirlwind journey across the globe.

Hetty is just an average little girl, but when a mystical turn of events lands her in Tibet where she encounters a Yeti her life heads in a whole new direction. Now, Hetty must help the Yeti and uncover the mystery in the Himalayan Mountains before it's too late.

I love how the story's narrator is a deceased marmot, who is mostly worried about the ghastly smell of death he is emitting. This clever use of humor immediately grabs the readers attention and leaves them wanting to read more. Hetty and the Yeti is an exciting adventure, with unusual and charming characters that will delight readers young and old.

I highly recommend picking up a copy.

About the Author

Jules loves old B movie monster films, the culture and art of Asia and childish humour, and decided to put them altogether when writing his new book, Hetty and the Yeti. This is the first book he has written for this age group. He has illustrated books in the UK and the USA. Jules has also worked as a teacher and for a wildlife organisation and would strongly advise anyone against working with either children or animals.

He lives in the north east of England with his long-term girlfriend and their two children, whom he cruelly puts to work as his book reviewers, proof readers and general dog’s bodies.

My name is Olivia Howe. I'm 20 years old. I was born in Florida and raised in Maine. I enjoy writing, blogging, reading, and sleeping. Music is my life! I write better when I'm listening to music. I mostly listen to rock music like Tesla, Led Zeppelin, The Cure, Nirvana, Audioslave, Metallica, Motley Crue, Matchbox Twenty, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. I just love music in general.

Writing "The Dark Love Series" truly saved my life. In 2013, I was diagnosed with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) and GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder). Depression and anxiety is the hardest things to live with. I'm not ashamed of it anymore, it's who I am. I'm beautifully broken. That's when I discovered I wanted to write, and Dark Love was born. I didn't want the story to end there, because I connected so much with all of these character, so Seeing Red was born.

Seeing Red has been a long journey, not only for me, but for my characters too.
I've dealt with writer's block on many occasions. Luckily, music cured that! My
characters have become my life. I feel like I live in their world sometimes, then I stop
writing and get snapped back into reality.

Without "Dark Love" and “Seeing Red” I would probably still be struggling with
severe depression and anxiety. I was lost for a while, but writing saved my life, it truly
did.

About the Book

Title: The Sinful Man
Author: Keith Rommel
Genre: Fiction, Thriller, Suspense
Number of Pages: 220
Publication Date: Coming June 2014
Summary: What would you do if you had to face your sins? Leopold Conroy finds himself deep in the woods, being chased by a faceless mob. When he happens upon a cabin tucked deep into the foliage, he's frantic to get inside, to get away from those he managed to stay ahead of. But when the old woman that resides in the cabin invites him in, the mysteries of his life and the reason why he is there begins to unfold.

Disbelieving the stories he's being told and thinking the woman has gone mad from her years in seclusion, he attempts to leave the cabin but finds the mob that chased him are patiently waiting for him and they're something out of a nightmare.

Keith is the co screenplay writer for The Cursed Man movie being filmed in Los Angeles, California as a major motion picture under the same title (and he still doesn't believe it's true - someone slap him!)
