The Obsession of Doctor Pendergrass by John David Buchanan Book Blitz

Historical Fiction

Pendergrass loved the city of London. But the economic success of the late 1800s had a dark side. London attracted criminals like a magnet. They immigrated to England from everywhere on earth to feed on the innocent, the naïve, and the desperate. Doctor Pendergrass knew their handiwork - stabbings, beatings, and maimings – they filled as many hospital beds as cholera and dysentery.

World commerce had set upon England like a stiff wind from the sea that utterly refused to cease. It brought wealth, prosperity, business, banking, and, to some of its citizens, all the accoutrements of success. But, all was not good, and Pendergrass was all too aware of the city’s underbelly. London herself was blessed beyond measure. Like the finest lady in waiting, she attended the needs of a great nation. Yet, she was cursed by the very blessings that made her mistress great.

That played hard in the minds of those who struggled to make ends meet, during what they were told were the best times in England’s history. Those on the fringes of wealth and success, just beyond its welcome grasp, pressed on, hoping for the best, as the best played out all around them, and without them.

It was on the fringes of the hard-working classes that another element carved its niche in London’s great financial success. An element that was drawn to the great boom in industry, the rise in population, and the raging influx of money. Like moths to a flame they crawled out of their hiding places in England, on the continent, and from all other parts of the world, to see how they might profit from the furious growth and commerce that beset the businesses of London.

But these elements had no aristocratic connections, and regarded hard work, any real work, with contempt. Their mantra was, "let the mindless fools play out their lives in stress and backbreaking labor."They thought they had a more clever way to riches. Their devices were thievery and robbery, mischief and mayhem, deceit, larceny, blackmail and murder.

Pendergrass was not happy about the decay of law and order. He was not happy about it in the least. He and his associates at Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital were working grueling days, and it seemed no matter how hard they worked, or how innovative they were, the flow of brutalized Londoners through their front doors was endless. Pendergrass mulled over the city’s plight.

"There is a mean element at work in our beloved London. An element that knows no bounds and is unfettered by decency. Left unchecked, it will be the ruin of us all." He pondered the problem often, almost daily, as he read his morning paper.

The situation seemed to be getting worse, in spite of Howard Vincent’s appointment as Scotland Yard’s Director of Criminal Investigations. If 10,000 bobbies couldn’t stop the crime wave, what could be done? What could the individual citizens of London do to make a difference?

Pendergrass was seething mad. He had no idea what others might do, but he knew exactly what he intended to do.

About the Author

John David Buchanan grew up in San Antonio, Texas in a military family, went to Southwest Texas University, and upon graduating with a Masters Degree in Science, worked as an environmental specialist for 26 years. He started and ran his own firm, Buchanan Environmental Associates, for 18 years. Now, he's a writer and musician, and also the chef, yard boy, pool boy and handyman at his home in Humble, Texas.

Buchanan published three science fiction books as part of his Jump Starting the Universe Series, and while working on book three of that series, got the idea for his new book, The Obsession of Dr. Pendergrass.  He never enjoyed history in school, but then, he made a trip to England with his wife and visited Hastings. He's been interested in history ever since. He's traveled to London several times, and loved it every time he went.  So, using it as the location of this story seemed perfect.

Author Interview

Would you share a little bit about yourself with us today?

I’ve seen myself in lots of different roles—as a teacher of English and foreign languages, as an academic language therapist helping dyslexic children learn reading and writing skills, as an enthusiastic singer and piano accompanist, as an avid student of the Bible, as a wife, mother and grandmother. But until recently I hadn’t envisioned myself as the author of a book.

Why do you think it took so long for the idea of writing a book to take hold?

Even though I’ve enjoyed writing and took several excellent writing courses early on, I made the mistake of thinking of writing too much as a personal accomplishment rather than simply enjoying the process of being a channel for the ideas that were coming to me. So when an essay and a short story I’d submitted for publication met with a negative response—or no response at all!—I let myself become discouraged.

There were other reasons as well. I was preoccupied with raising children. More importantly, I hadn’t yet had the life experiences that prepared me to write these books. And from a purely practical standpoint, an independent route to first-time authorship has not been available until relatively recently.

How does it feel to you to be a published author?

A bit like sending the children you’ve loved and nurtured off to school for the first time! My books are my babies, and, like most mothers, I delighted in the early stages of their development. They often surprised me in the amazing process of becoming what they were meant to be.

But the time inevitably came when, if they were to fulfill their purpose, those “babies” had to be released into the big wide world, where others might or might not approve of them. Perhaps the most difficult step I took in launching them was to send them to Kirkus Reviews for an unbiased assessment of their merit. The day I found those reviews in my email was one for celebration. My babies had passed the test with flying colors!

Why have you decided to republish the books five years after they first came out?

So that they can bless a wider audience. It’s been enjoyable getting enthusiastic feedback from friends and acquaintances who’ve read them, but outside my circle of acquaintance, they’ve been reaching relatively few readers. When I heard that LaShawn Dobbs of Divine Purpose Publishing had expressed an interest in them, I felt the door was opening to a divinely provided opportunity to make them accessible to more people.

Are you currently working on another book?

Not at present. My books weren’t written because I wanted to become an author. They both seemed to have a life beyond me. It felt as if I were being demanded to write them—as if my own purpose could not be fulfilled without writing them. Unless another book comes to my thought as a clear imperative, these two may end up being my only book “babies.” Time will tell. But meanwhile I’ve enjoyed writing essays and poetry. Writing is always important to me as a way of processing ideas.

About the Author

Robin “R.D.” Kardon is a native New Yorker, educated in the New York City public school system.  She attended New York University where she earned a B.A. in Journalism and Sociology, magna cum laude, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

After college, Robin went to law school at The American University, Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.  There, she was a Moot Court champion and earned her J.D. Thus began her ten-year career as a commercial litigator.

Disillusioned with the law, Robin sought out another career and started training to become a pilot in 1991.  She eventually earned her Certified Flight Instructor ratings, quit practicing, and started teaching to build flight time.  Eventually, she worked as both a corporate and airline pilot, and has flown all kinds of aircraft from single-engine Cessnas to the Boeing 737 all over the US and the world.  Robin has an FAA Airline Transport Pilot certificate with three Captain qualifications (type-ratings) and is also a Commercial/Instrument-rated helicopter pilot.

The tragedy of September 11, 2001 decimated the aviation industry.  Unfortunately, Robin was furloughed from the airline job she held on that date, and her career never recovered from the blow.  She left aviation voluntarily in 2004, and began a career as an executive search consultant specializing in helping companies hire in-house attorneys.

Flygirl existed for twenty years as 83 pages printed in WordPerfect on blue notepaper until Robin decided to finish the novel in 2015.  After so many drafts and revisions she’s lost count, Flygirl enters the world on January 15, 2019 via Acorn Publishing, a hybrid imprint.

Genre: YA Contemporary - LGBTQ
Release Date: June 26th 2018
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press
Summary: John Lennon fought for world peace, but sixteen-year-old hippie hopeful Kale Oswald’s only made it as far as tie-dying his T-shirts with organic grape juice. Now he’s ready to cement his new hippie identity by joining a local human rights organization, but he doesn’t fit in as well as he’d hoped.

After landing himself in the hospital by washing down a Ziploc bag of pills with a bottle of Gatorade, Julian Mendez came clean to his mother: he is a girl stuck in a boy’s body. Puberty blockers have stopped the maturing of the body he feels has betrayed him. They’re also supposed to give him time to be sure he wants to make a more permanent decision, but he’s already Julia in his heart. What he’s not sure he’s ready to face is the post-transition name-calling and bathroom wars awaiting him at school.

When Kale and Julian come face-to-face at the human rights organization, attraction, teenage awkwardness, and reluctant empathy collide. About the Author

Picture
Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technolog

Excerpt

New town, same life. Even though leaving Manhattan was the hardest thing I had ever done, I knew it was best for me to leave and start over. So here I stand in my plush penthouse apartment, one year later. Taking a sip of my Scotch on the rocks, gazing out my floor-to-ceiling window, wondering what this magnificent town was going to bring me tomorrow. I always liked the nights in LA. It seemed to be the only time that the big city came to life. I loved the rush of a city at night. It was like escaping into a whole different world where every fantasy could be lived.

It was also the time when your worst nightmares could appear, and believe me, I had my share. As I downed my drink, I reflected that the night always brought back one nightmare in particular. I will never forget the look on my brother’s face when he realized I was dead. God, how I hated doing that to him, but it was the only way to break free.

Looking back at that day at Willow Crossing, it was amazing what one tiny pill could do. It could slow the heartbeat just enough to make it seem like you were dead. A little bit of animal blood as a prop could make it that much more real. With a little planning and a little money anything was possible. Luckily for me, I ran into the right man, and he needed a little help himself. The hardest part was finding a body. “Good old college academics and those donor lists,” I thought to myself with a chuckle. Who would have thought that a body being donated to science would be my savior? And with a little help from my needy coroner friend, I would soon be nonexistent. Free to start over.

Grabbing my suit jacket from the barstool, I casually put it on, making sure to catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror above the expensive accent table. There was always something about a man in a suit that women seemed to go crazy for, and with the money I’ve made, I always made sure my closet was brimming with the best designer suits money could buy. Picking up the keys to my Jag from the table, I smoothed back my brown hair and adjusted the collar of my freshly-pressed shirt. Tonight was my night off and I really wanted to have some fun.

As I rode the elevator down to the parking garage, the memory of what I left in Manhattan came aboard. Thinking back, the only downside to my plan was hurting the one person I loved most. I guess for every action there is a reaction, and the reaction was a new life for me. Besides, he’ll survive. With the only woman he ever loved at his side and the men he served with watching his back, he’ll do just fine. As for me, I am alive and well, living in California. I’m no longer Josh Hyatt, born of a convict and raised by a mom and dad who couldn’t be honest to the son who brought them so much joy. That man died a long time ago, and a new man was born.

While I smiled to myself in my new reality, the elevator door opened, and a gorgeous brunette got on. Checking out the curves on this beauty, I needed to get me some of that. Inhaling the scent of her perfume, I casually leaned over and asked in a sultry low voice, “That scent you’re wearing is breathtaking. What is it, if you don’t mind me asking?”

The minute she turned and our eyes met, I knew this was going to be easy. There was a hunger inside those emerald eyes that couldn’t be mistaken. At least there was one thing I didn’t regret. Watch out, LA, Xavier London is in town.

About the Author

Award winning Author of the Independent Press Award., NYC Big Book Award, and the 2018 National Indie Excellence Award.

My love for writing began several years ago after an early retirement from a demanding job that I loved, but also hated because it consumed so much of my time. Now, I am able to focus my time on what I love. Writing romance has been a life long dream and to actually say that I am a published author is beyond what I would have ever expected.

Even though some may say I have a little naughtiness in my books, I look at it as an added bonus for my readers. After all what is a romance book without a little spice.

When I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with friends either at home or out on the town. Mostly, I enjoy a relaxing night at home where I can enjoy a glass of wine in the company of a good book.

Before Katie bolted down her emotions, Alex captured her hand. She didn’t try to pull away. “What are you afraid of?” he gritted out.
Katie regarded him from the shadowed side of the cab. Her eyes sparkled and color stained her cheeks. Not about to let this moment go, he hit the brakes and swung the truck onto the berm. Seconds ticked by and he pursued an answer. “Well?”
She tightened her hold on his hand as if she couldn’t bear to let go. But he wasn’t a mind reader. Alex hungered to tell her his thoughts or rather how they were changing, only he didn’t have the words to match these newfound feelings.
“Alex,” she murmured, entwining their fingers. “I don’t know what to say.”
Nor did he. They’d become closer but what did it mean? To rush their relationship could very well tear it apart. Like so many things in life, to proceed forward in a new direction required careful planning. Rushing headlong in unchartered waters was something he would’ve done years ago. But for once in Alex’s life, the risk was too great if it meant losing this woman’s respect.
This was indeed new territory. He squeezed Katie’s hand. The first stoplight of the town was a hundred meters ahead. If she was agreeable, he wanted to visit the spot that had prompted this adventure. Maybe she needed reminding that this trip wasn’t just about him finding something essential. She was part and parcel of this journey.
A trip, like any trip, would change them both, and he gave her a rueful grin. “I hear it’s karaoke night at Woody’s. You up for a song?”

Meet Sydney
Chapter Title: Hope Exists
Sydney Dela Torre is creative, passionate and funny. She has a heart for God that exudes in her writing. Her transparency and vulnerability are on display as she walks her audience through the fragments of her broken life so God may be glorified. Sydney has always been encouraged by others to “share her story.” From after school children’s programs to women and youth groups, her words open the window to her heart. Often witty, Sydney approaches some of life’s toughest challenges with candor, honesty and an understanding that no problem is too big for God. Personal discoveries, as well as spiritual growth, have proven to be a source of inspiration for her writings. Her works introduce real flawed characters who overcome obstacles through Jesus. Currently penning her first fiction novel, about God’s love and grace breaking down barriers and transforming hearts, she hopes to complete it soon. Sydney and her husband, William, reside in the breathtaking mountains of Arnold, California. Facebook
Meet Yolando Chapter Title: Unfailing Love Yolando Cooksey is a published devotional author in The Upper Room magazine and was recently published in an anthology, The Short and Sweet of It: When the Right Word is a Short Word. She enjoys writing as an expression of sharing her faith and her journey of developing an intimate, personal love relationship with Jesus Christ. Although raised in a Christian home, Yolando did not discover intimacy with God until after suffering several traumatic events in her life. The experiences God allowed Yolando to go through have been her motivation and passion to mentor teen girls and women to find the true meaning of real, authentic, and unfailing love. Yolando's foundation in Christ has been the guiding light in her writing and making a decision to return to school after retiring in 2015. Yolando is pursuing a master's degree in Social Work with a goal to counsel at-risk youth and children in the foster system. Yolando is a mother, grandmother, friend, and most importantly, a daughter of the Most High God. It is her dream that women truly learn who and whose they are! Facebook

I had it all. Two beautiful children. A gainfully employed husband. A successful food blog.

The only thing missing from my life was . . . heat.

And I wanted to live. To live loudly and without fear.

I also wanted my husband to think I was as hot as I was when we were high school sweethearts. More, I wanted what my sister had: love, passion, and a husband whose love was infinite.

Because something was happening with Rob. Had he fallen out of love with me? Had he found someone else? Was I not--

Sigh.

Was I not enough?

Disaster at Roosevelt Ranch
Release Date: December 13, 2016

I slept with the wrong twin.

And all I got for it in return was a broken heart.

Oh yeah, and a baby on the way—there’s that too.

But I’m determined to make it on my own. I don’t need a man, thank you very much. Not rich, charismatic, and decidedly flighty Rex Roosevelt, and especially not his twin brother, Justin.

No matter that the gorgeous former military doctor makes my heart beat a little faster . . . and all spots lower than that pay careful, careful attention.

None of that matters. The Roosevelt men are dangerous and I’m steering clear.

The trouble is, Justin refuses to leave me be.

And deep down, I don’t want to avoid him.

Deep down, I want to be even closer.
