Poor Little Guy by Elanna Allen Blog Tour, Book Review & Giveaway

About the Book

Picture
Title: Poor Little Guy
Author: Elanna Allen
Publisher: Dial Books
Publication Date: June 7, 2016
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Number of Pages: 40
Synopsis: With the cheeky twist of Jon Klassen’s This Is Not My Hat and the graphic appeal of Mo Willems, Poor Little Guy will leave kids giggling…and begging for rereads!

What do you do when you're so tiny that the bigger ocean creatures think you might even tasteadorable?

An itsy-bitsy, glasses-wearing fish is minding his own business when a playful (and hungry) octopus snatches him right up. Luckily, this poor little guy is not quite as innocent as he seems…and he has a BIG surprise up his sleeve!

Told with wit, a wink, and a delightfully dark sense of humor, Poor Little Guy celebrates the very smallest...and all of their giant victories. Hand this cute but mighty book to fans of Bob Shea and Dan Krall.

Making the Transition from Animator to Picture Book Author
Guest Post by Elanna Allen

My passion is storytelling and design for children, however I do it differently for animation and for books.  When I work in animation, I’m always part of a large team.  The collaboration is critical, and the process is lengthy.   Everything is methodically considered.  In books, the key is to find the spontaneity, and to try to get an immediate burst of creativity across to the reader.  I love both media, but they require different approaches and quite different kinds of storytelling.    I think working in the two different media have made each body of work stronger – I try to bring gesture and motion to my work in print, and I try to bring a spontaneity to my work in animation.

My Review

Picture
Poor Little Guy is a wildly entertaining tale of a little fish who takes matters into his own fins when the other creatures underestimate is small stature.

The little fish is just swimming around minding his own business when an octopus surprises him and decides to have some fun. However, it's the little fish who has a few surprises up his fin.

I absolutely adore this book. The simple text and detailed illustrations will easily keep little ones engaged. The sea creatures' silly antics will have readers laughing out loud and leave them wanting to hear the story over and over again.

I shared this book with my two-year-old grandson and he was giggling with delight and cheering for the little fish to swim faster and faster away from danger. We read the story together a couple of times and he soon had the pages memorized and was "reading" it to everyone else.

Kudos on a job well done! I highly recommend picking up a copy of Poor Little Guy.

About the Book

What does crazy look like? Let Deborah tell it, it's the reflection that looks back at her in the mirror. She has a career she loves, two beautiful children and a handsome and successful husband. Her life seems to be the blueprint almost every woman she knows would kill to live. But working full-time, being a full-time mother, full-time wife and a full-time Sunday only Christian seems to be taking its toll on her. With all the scheming and shenanigans Deborah orchestrated to get this lifestyle, she might have to come up with a whole set of new ones to maintain it.

Lynox is Deborah's husband who she thanks God for putting back into her life after a game of cat and mouse that defies the laws of romance. He feels that all Deborah needs is to let her hair down, maybe make some new friends and live a little. When Deborah agrees and then suspects Lynox of having an affair with the woman that he suggested she form a friendship with, will he live to regret his own advice?
