The Early Buzz

"I just LOVED this little book. Empowering for young girls, and at the same time powerful for young boys... The illustrations are perfect for this book: fun and eye-grabbing, and I also love that it includes facts about popular icons like Aretha Franklin and Baseball legends. Well done! " ~ 5 Star Review, Mariana L., Amazon

"Roxie Rogers is an inspiring read for all ages, truly. It speaks to that little voice inside all of us telling us "come out" to the real you. The artwork brings the story to life, and the text is great for read-along or for young readers on their own." ~ 5 Star Review, Laura, Amazon

"I just read Roxy Rogers to my 5-year old daughter and we both loved the book! The story was fun and engaging filled with dynamic illustrations. Besides the great life messages woven into the story, I really like how the story reads. It is really nice to experience a children’s book that is not mind numbing in its repetitiveness (you know the type) with words that flow easily off the pages. " ~ 5 Star Review, Wendigo, Amazon

About the Author: Emily Siskin-Toy

Emily Siskin-Toy

A U.C. Santa Cruz banana slug alum, Emily Siskin-Toy launched her writing career with posts at various film and television magazines in Los Angeles. After a break in the action to raise her daughter, Emily and her college sweetheart founded WOW! Music Studios, a successful children’s music instruction school in Mill Valley, California. But just like the character in her book, Emily’s true passion was something entirely different; she always dreamed of writing children’s books. Inspiration was everywhere for Roxy Rogers: Your Destiny Is Calling. While coaching her daughter’s youth softball and basketball teams, Emily eventually came to realize that the world of sports was a passion of hers, not her daughter’s, who really wanted, of course, to be a singer. The plot of the story was right in front of her, and the surrounding details would be cultivated from her lifetime of love for the rich history of Major League Baseball and her daughter’s love of music.

S.M. Knowles was born in Elmira, New York where she was swept away in a whirlwind to the Land of Oz--Independence, Kansas. Her parents were relocating for working opportunities and decided that this would be the perfect place to start new roots. Little did she know that this place would contribute to the inspiration for the first book she wrote in her Rylee Everley Series While growing up, S.M. would travel the roads around her house while imagining she was somewhere else. Her imagination would take her everywhere, making the long hot summer days seem shorter throughout her fantasies. At the age of twelve, she decided to write her first book. Filled mostly with dialog, she filled up one-hundred pages, front and back. After taking the book downstairs to show her mom, and persuading her to buy her more paper, she excitedly ran back to her room. As she barreled through the door, S.M. tripped over items left on her floor, and her papers came raining down in her room. Discouraged, she stood there in tears, picking up her papers and throwing them in the trash. Her work had no organization, no numbers on her pages, just a child fulfilling a joy that she would put down and not pick up again. When she became older, she joined the military for something different. In that time, she was able to explore many places and even met her husband in Iraq. After coming home, she started her family in Arizona and went back to school, earning a Master's degree in Adult Education and Training.

About the Book

Title:
Furmaid
Author: Julia Dweck
Illustrator: Aida Sofia Barba
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Number of Pages: 61
Synopsis: “Not another mermaid story,” little Minnow wails, as Mama minnow tucks him into his coral bed. Readers will learn that this is no ordinary mermaid tale. This mermaid’s “tale” is quite extraordinary. Readers will delight in the bold and colorful illustrations and tender story line. Swim along with Finoor on her very first enchanting underwater adventure.

My Review

Furmaid
is an unusual tale about a little mermaid whose unique characteristics and kind heart make her an inspiration to us all.

It's time for bed and little Minnow wants to hear a bedtime story, but he doesn't want it to be an average run of the mill mermaid story. Mama Minnow promises this one to be unlike any he's ever heard before. Reluctantly little Minnow agrees to listen unaware that he's in for a very big surprise.

I just love the title of this book! Although "Furmaid" starts out as a word used to tease Finnoor it later becomes a term of endearment, one that reminds us just how special she truly is.As the other mermaids torment her, she begins to feel bad about herself and wishes she wasn't different. But, when the mermaids and sea creatures are in trouble Finnoor wastes no time coming to the rescue with the very thing everyone has been poking fun at. The message of this story is clear and teaches children to be themselves and embrace their differences. They also learn to always have a kind heart even towards those who may not show kindness in return.

I recommend picking up a copy of Furmaid. Available on Amazon.

About the Book

Title: Heaven in Your Eyes
Author: Lori Leger
Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Suspense
Number of Pages: 277
Synopsis: Annie McAllister's prospects for the New Year look rather grim. While other people are trying to keep resolutions, she's dodging phone calls and threats from a man who came dangerously close to ending her life on New Year's Eve. Rather than put her family at risk, Drake LeBlanc finally persuades her to let him help in the fight to keep her safe. The handsome Texas attorney has already saved her life once, so why not let him move in temporarily?

Though Drake would welcome the chance to become a permanent fixture in Annie's life, he's hampered by her determined efforts to protect herself from men like him. In his quest to win her trust, as well as keep her safe, Drake earns the loyalty of Annie's pet cat, Martin, and wise-cracking parrot, Lewis.

As her relentless stalker continues to wreak havoc on Annie's life, Drake tries to break through the barriers she's placed around her heart. Can his love and determination accomplish what no man has done since her last relationship ended in disaster? Or will a sadist find a way to get to Annie before Drake can make her admit her feelings for him?

Includes romantic subplot involving Annie's oldest brother, Chad, and his wife Julia.

My Review

Heaven in Your Eyes is a well written story with a little something for everyone. It's a beautiful romance with comical situations, and thrilling suspense all rolled into one.

Someone is stalking Annie and his boldness is getting scarier with every encounter. Knowing that Annie's life is in danger, Drake LeBlanc convinces her to let him help. He is immediately taken by Annie, but the protective wall she's constructed around her heart cannot easily be broken. With the stalker's violence escalating Drake moves into Annie's home. Reluctant to share her living space with this arrogant, yet handsome man, Annie realizes she has no choice. Will Annie ever open her heart and allow herself to love again? Can they determine who the mysterious stalker is before it's too late?

I have to say I have read the entire La Fleur de Love series (Heaven in Your Eyes being the last) and each book is captivating in it's own right. I enjoy how the characters continue to appear throughout the entire series while each book focuses on a specific couple. I am a big fan of Lori Leger and her writing style. She has an incredible ability to spin amazing tales that draw the reading in. Heaven in Your Eyes is no exception. The love story between Annie and Drake is heartwarming and reader's won't be able to stop themselves from falling victim to Drake's charm. The stalker adds a suspenseful twist and keeps readers guessing until the end. Once you start reading you won't be able to put it down.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Heaven in Your Eyes and if you haven't done so grab copies of the rest of the La Fleur de Love series. Available on Amazon.

About the Book

Title: Francine's Miracle (The Miracle Trilogy)
Author: Emeka Iwenofu
Genre: Spiritual / Motivational
Number of Pages: 162
Synopsis: Embark on an exciting adventure through the life of a young Irish girl named Francine who immigrates with her family to the United States from Ireland in the search for the American Dream. This story is the beginning of The Miracle Trilogy which takes place during the 1920s era. In this setting, Francine incurs many challenges during her childhood. Despite the world of Prohibition and organized crime, the young girl endures a life of verbal abuse, violence, a dysfunctional family, poverty, tragedy, endless domestic chores and a constant plea for help away from her surroundings.

It isn't until a sudden twist of fate compels the young girl to receive aid and coaching from a special woman who exposes to her a closely guarded secret that helps makes all of Francine's dreams come true. Witness an exciting book that details all the elements needed for any reader to attain success in life despite their current status, situation, or environment.

In the words of Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, either way you're right. It's the thinking that makes it so." It truly is a must read.

My Review

Francine's Miracle (Book One of The Miracle Trilogy) is a powerful story about a young girl who overcomes so much to achieve happiness.

Francine Sullivan and her family have made the long journey from Ireland to the land of opportunity. Once in America Francine's father, Paul, wastes no time finding a lucrative job bootlegging for the Irish Mob. The family quickly becomes accustomed to the new wealth and decides to look the other way regarding Paul's business practices. However, it all comes crashing down when the family narrowly escapes a hail of gunfire in their family home. Francine's mother takes the children to live far from the violence and when Paul makes a fateful mistake he too is forced to leave the mob and rejoins his family. As if financial problems aren't enough, the Sullivan family experiences a great loss when 2 year old Samuel suddenly passes away. The family begins to crumble and Francine desperately wants to escape. A chance meeting with a very special woman changes her life forever.

Francine's Miracle is a heartwarming story that teaches readers, despite their circumstance, they have the power to find happiness. Francine's character progresses from a happy child to a desperate teen. Many readers will be able to identify with her transformation. It will leave them yearning for Francine to find her way and overjoyed when she ultimately does. The story reminds us that the world is full of negativity and all it takes is one source of positive influence to make all the difference.

Francine's Miracle is a feel good story, highly motivational and rewarding. I recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

About the Book

Title:
Lycanthor the Werewolf
Author: Aiden Storm
Illustrator: McCartney Leopardi
Genre: Middle Grade Science Fiction Fantasy
Number of Pages: 71
Synopsis: An epic tale of magic and adventure to inspire and delight young readers.

Thirteen year old Jack is spending the summer at his Aunt’s house in the country. Unfortunately, it’s done nothing but rain and he’s stuck in her old mansion without cable or internet. Bored and alone, he sets out to explore the house. When he reaches the attic, he finds an intricate and unusual mural painted on the walls. Life for Jack gets turned upside down when he stumbles and is transported through a portal into a magical world.

For Jasyra, the daughter of the High King, life couldn’t be worse. Her father has been turned to glass, her kingdom has been taken over by the Demon Emperor, and she and her friend, Evooku, have been exiled. The only way to save the land is to reassemble the Dragon Fyre Blade, but the Demon Emperor has hidden all six pieces and each is guarded by great mythical beasts. There is only one person who can help restore peace, but it has been said that he is not of their land.

When Jack awakens in the Great Forest of Karandur, he encounters Jasyra and Evooku. He discovers the only way home is to band together to fight the evil Lycanthor, a giant werewolf that guards a piece of the Dragon Fyre Blade. But first they have to make it through an enchanted land full of danger.

The Queen of Light appears to Jack and delivers a gift, as well as a revelation. He, Jasyra and Evooku form an unlikely friendship along the way and lasting bonds are made when they realize they are Karandur’s only hope. Will the trio be able to defeat Lycanthor and save the kingdom from an eternity of despair?

My Review

Lycanthor the Werewolf is a gripping fantasy that takes readers on a thrilling journey to a far off land to fight incredible creatures in order to defeat the Demon Emperor who has taken over the kingdom.

It's summer vacation and Jack has been sentenced to spend it in the country with his aunt. No cable, no internet, and rain everyday, this might just be the worst summer ever. Encouraged by his aunt to explore her old house, Jack stumbles on an unusual painting on the attic wall. Trying to get a better look Jack slips and is catapulted into another world where he meets Jasyra and Evooku. Jack learns that his only hope of ever returning home lies in the defeat of a giant werewolf named Lycanthor. Together with his new friends, Jack prepares to go to battle, but do they have what it takes to be victorious?

The intense opening scene sets the stage for the quick pace that is continued throughout the story. The author effectively creates a believable fantasy world within the real one and I felt the characters were sufficiently developed for middle grade readers. A lot of action is packed into the 71 pages which works well for this story and leaves readers eager to join Jack on his next mission. I believe younger children would enjoy the story, but the language and content were geared more towards 6-8 graders.

On a side note... I don't usually read other reviewers opinions for books I am reviewing, as I like to come to my own conclusion, but as I was preparing to post this review on Amazon I glanced through a few. I noticed many readers thought the story wasn't long enough for middle graders. Yes, the book is short, but in my opinion this is what makes it so captivating. There is never any down time for young readers to get bored. It's a story they can read in one sitting and the exciting adventure keeps them reading through to the end.

I would definitely recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.

Lobo faces some fears and witnesses the joy that comes from helping others in this "birds of a different feather DO flock together" tale.

My Review

Lobo Goes to the Galapagos is the delightful adventure of an unusual group of friends, who undertake a challenging mission in order to help an injured bird get back to his island home.

After the storm passes Lobo discovers a wounded bird has ended up in his forest. Once Roxy has the bird bandaged up, Lobo vows to help him get home. As they begin their journey their group grows soon several animals have joined in the mission, but Lobo has no idea what the rescue entails. Will he be brave enough?

Lobo could not be more lovable! When Bobby the blue-footed booby needs help, Lobo wastes no time leaping into action. Lobo's caring nature teaches children to be kind to others and to help those who are in need. The bright and colorful illustrations add so much to this fun animal adventure.

About the Book

Title: Twisted Reflections
Author: Shay West
Genre: Paranormal Fantasy
Number of Pages: 205
Synopsis: Alexis Davenport is learning to come to grips with her ability to travel through time, but she still hasn’t been able to stop the evil Drifter and his Master from trying to alter the past.

When she travels back to ancient Egypt, Alex gets a most unexpected surprise; she meets someone who can help her figure out how to use her powers, another Traveler like herself.

But can Alex learn how to control her gift before Drifter finds a way to stop her from meddling in his Master’s plans?

My Review

Twisted Reflections is an exciting time travel adventure filled with unexpected moments that will keep you on the edge and leave you yearning for more.

Alex has a gift, she is able to travel through a mirror to the past. She is struggling to gain control of her special ability and with the Drifter bent on changing the past it's more important than ever for Alex to figure it all out. The mysterious Egyptian girl has appeared again and Alex knows she must find out who she is because she senses the girl is in trouble. Alex hopes to uncover the truth about the girl before she is forced to travel again, but with Drifter on the lose that might not be possible. Forced to deal with the inevitable Alex travels to ancient Egypt, where she encounters another traveler like herself. Can her new friend help her sort things out and gain control of her power before Drifter and his Master destroy the past?

First, I have to say that I did not read the first book in the series, but was able to easily catch up without feeling lost. Twisted Reflections captured my attention from the get go. The absorbing mystery, well developed and effectively organized plot make for a pleasurable read. I liked Alex's character. She is a typical teen, worried about clothes, cell phones, and friends, but when she realizes it's up to her to stop Drifter she steps up, doing whatever it takes. She is strong willed and determined making her the perfect person for the life changing mission at hand.

Twisted Reflections is a captivating coming of age story and I recommend picking up a copy. Available on Amazon.
