Synopsis: Wade Summers wants nothing more than to go on his date tonight with high school hottie Glory Schoonover.
Unfortunately, a fierce February blizzard has blown in and a couple of first-time heifers are calving early. Way too early.
And Wade’s never delivered a calf all by himself before.
His grandfather was always there to show him the way.
Simmering under the teenage hormones and unexpected birthing is a dutiful son who
finally confronts the abuse of his shady stepfather and a betrayal by his somewhat disengaged
Kirkus Reviews called this coming-of-age story “An exciting, elegant debut.”
It’s rough around the edges, full of brutal hardship, raw strength, and pure heart.
Wade is on the verge of manhood and he's determined not to let anything stand in his way, not his worthless step-dad, not his younger siblings, and certainly not the cows who are on the verge of giving birth. But, we all know what they say about the best laid plans...guilt ridden over leaving the struggling cows and the voice of his deceased grandfather ringing in his ears, Wade, as usual, does the right thing and helps the cows birth their calves. Now, he's late for the school dance and definitely ruined his chances with the super hot girl, his big evening seems hopeless, and he knows he's going to have to deal with his stepfather when he gets home . However, Wade's life's about to change and he discovers, as the Rolling Stones so cleverly put it, "you can't always get what you want...sometimes you might just find you get what you need."
Calves in the Mud Room is a well told story brimming with vivid details and identifiable characters. Like the rare orchid Wade buys for his date (which she rejects as worthless) his life is ready to bloom into one of beauty and opportunity. I like that Wade takes a stand and as the story came to an end I knew he was going to be okay after all. I very much enjoyed Calves in the Mud Room.
