About the Book: Harriet the Invincible

Picture
Title: Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible | Author: Ursula Vernon | Publication Date: August 18, 2015 | Publisher: Dial Books | Number of Pages: 256 | Genre: Children's Graphic Novel/ Fractured Fairy Tale
Book Description:

Sleeping Beauty gets a feisty, furry twist in this hilarious new comic series from the creator of Dragonbreath

Harriet Hamsterbone is not your typical princess. She may be quite stunning in the rodent realm (you'll have to trust her on this one), but she is not so great at trailing around the palace looking ethereal or sighing a lot. She finds the royal life rather . . . dull. One day, though, Harriet's parents tell her of the curse that a rat placed on her at birth, dooming her to prick her finger on a hamster wheel when she's twelve and fall into a deep sleep. For Harriet, this is most wonderful news: It means she's invincible until she's twelve! After all, no good curse goes to waste. And so begins a grand life of adventure with her trusty riding quail, Mumfrey...until her twelfth birthday arrives and the curse manifests in a most unexpected way.

Perfect for fans of Babymouse and Chris Colfer's Land of Stories
, this laugh-out-loud new comic hybrid series will turn everything you thought you knew about princesses on its head.

My Review

Picture
Harriet the Invincible is a brilliantly written and wildly humorous take on the well known fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. The best part? The main character is a hamster!

Harriet is no ordinary hamster princess and as exasperated as she makes her mom, Harriet has no interest in doing regular "princess" things. She wants to ride her quail and fight monsters and travel the kingdom and partake in dangerous adventures. So the day Harriet's parents reveal the horrible curse that was cast upon her as a baby Harriet is ecstatic. In Harriet's eyes this is the best news she has ever received because really what kind of evil fairy would cast a spell and let the victim die before the curse was fulfilled? However, once she turns 12 all bets are off, but for now Harriet is INVINCIBLE!

This is actually the first book by Ursula Vernon that I have read and she had me hooked from the first page! How could you not be drawn to an unorthodox hamster princess who to rides around on a quail? The author is witty and clever and her talent shines through in Harriet's humorous adventure. I love how Harriet embraces her curse and lives life to the fullest knowing her impending doom is upon her. Harriet, being a resourceful hamster, refuses to sit back and let fate takeover, which makes her all that more appealing as a character. I have to say Harriet the Invincible is a fantastic tale and I am now one of Ursula Vernon's newest fans. I can't wait read about Harriet's next adventure.

I highly recommend picking up a copy.
