Despite census data that shows 37% of the US population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. Using the Multicultural Children’s Book Day holiday, the MCBD Team is on a mission to change all of that.

About the Author: Michael Smith
About the Illustrators: Angela Alvarenga & Jonathan E. Goley
Jonathon E. Goley (1953 - 2015) illustrated hundreds of celebrated works for major television shows and feature films for over 30 years. His notable television series and animated movie credits include Dora the Explorer, The Addams Family, The Smurfs, Tom and Jerry, The Flintstone Kids, The Pagemaster, Ferngully the Last Rainforest, and The Jetsons.
One of my favorite aspects of the book is that it is written in lovely verse. Studies show that rhyme can improve reading skills and help children detect the phonetic constituents of words. This, together with the lessons on the water cycle and the English/Spanish text make It Starts with a Raindrop a delightful and beautiful multicultural read.
The amazing illustrations are done in soft colors and are wonderfully detailed which add to the story's charm.
I highly recommend picking up a copy of It Starts with a Raindrop. Perfect for classroom and home libraries.
2. Children (with adult help) will need to cut all sorts of blue art from magazines
3. Use glue sticks to overlap all the pieces on the white raindrop, with lighter colors on left and darker on the right.
4. When complete, cut out the drop for smooth edges.
