Have you ever seen a "work of art" worth millions, which looks like something your child just brought home from school? The dual perspective of "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder" and just a little bit of "The Emperor's New Clothes" is evident in this clever artwork story of a child who paints a fingerpaint print in class and then loses it in the wind on the way home. Illustrated from the point of view of a child, whose identity is left to the imagination of the reader since all of the illustrations are what the child sees, the fingerpaint print is interpreted by official "judges" as well as by bystanders. Should people be influenced by what others see, or use their own self-esteem to make their own judgments? (Amazon)
My Fingerpaint Masterpiece is a colorfully creative rhyming tale of how one child's unfinished art project becomes an award winning painting on display for all to see.
One day in art class a child begins finger painting a picture, but when the bell rings the picture is left incomplete. On the way home a big gust of wind carries the child's artwork away and it lands on a stack of art that's is being sorted for an art show. The child doesn't know what to do since it's obvious to the child that the finger painting is not art show quality or is it?
As a volunteer art teacher and a mom, all too often I have heard children put down their own artwork, creations that I have found to be expressive and amazing. It is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I believe children are most critical of themselves, especially if others aren't able to see their creations as they mean for them to be viewed. My Fingerpaint Masterpiece teaches children it's okay for everyone to have their own opinion and that they themselves shouldn't allow other people's opinions to influence the decisions they make.
The illustrations are brilliant and I think the finger painting is indeed a masterpiece. I also love how Sherrill Cannon's other books are hidden throughout the story. I made sure to find them all!
I highly recommend picking up My Fingerpaint Masterpiece. Available on Amazon.
