Excerpt
DEATH IN TROUT FORK
by Dolores Kimball (writing as D. M. O’Byrne)
Jack and I jogged along the trail behind the cabins just before sunrise the next morning. The sky was lightening, but the mountains blocked the sun’s rays, and the path was shrouded in near darkness. Jack trotted along next to me in his harness, his paws making no sound on the soft bed of pine needles that covered the trail surface. We stopped for a breather near the rock I had sat on the previous day, and I noticed Gil about fifty yards away, standing hip deep in the creek in his waders, casting his line upstream and watching it float by. He looked up briefly at me, then he turned away again.
I waited for Jack, who was digging in the dirt next to the trail, no doubt looking for a convenient place for a potty stop. After a few minutes, he was still digging, so I pulled on his leash. “C’mon, Jack. Let’s go.”
But he resisted and continued digging, growling and becoming more and more agitated. I pulled on the leash again, harder this time, but he wouldn’t budge.
I bent over and picked him up. “Okay, if you insist.”
I peered down at the hole he had made. Something didn’t seem quite right. I squatted to get a closer look, the cat squirming in my arms. I gasped and jumped back, lost my balance, and sat down hard. The taste of adrenaline flooded my mouth as I stared at three fingers protruding from the hole, the bright purple nail polish absurdly out of place among the rust-colored pine needles.

A Biography of Rock Hudson
Biography
Paperback Release Date: December 3, 2019
Publisher: Harper Paperbacks
SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE
The definitive biography of the deeply complex and widely misunderstood matinee idol of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
The embodiment of romantic masculinity in American film throughout the 50's and 60's, Rock Hudson reigned supreme as the king of Hollywood. As an Oscar-nominated leading man, Hudson won acclaim for his performances in glossy melodramas, adventure epics and blockbuster bedroom farces. Yet behind the suave and commanding star persona, there was an insecure, deeply conflicted and all too vulnerable human being. Growing up poor in Winnetka, Illinois, Hudson was abandoned by his biological father, abused by an alcoholic stepfather and controlled by his domineering mother. Despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Hudson was determined to become an actor. After signing with the powerful but predatory agent Henry Willson, the young hopeful was transformed from a clumsy, tongue-tied truck driver into Universal Studios' resident Adonis. In a more conservative era, Hudson's wholesome, straight-arrow screen image was at odds with his closeted homosexuality. Hudson was forever threatened with public exposure, not only by scandal sheets like "Confidential" magazine but by a number of his own partners. For years, Hudson dodged questions about his private life, but in 1985 the public learned that the actor was battling AIDS. The disclosure focused worldwide attention on the epidemic. Drawing on more than a hundred interviews with co-stars, family members, and former companions, "All That Heaven Allows: A Biography of Rock Hudson" finally delivers a complete and nuanced portrait of one of the most fascinating stars in cinema history.

A contract killer changed my life
The encounter inspired me to become a Crime Thriller writer.
He was a contract killer, and he was in my car!
I’d been lost, looking for West Thurrock in Essex, and asked a little old man in a shabby coat, on the opposite side of the road, the way. He offered to show me if I gave him a lift, and whilst I make it a rule never to give lifts to anyone I don’t know, I reasoned, he could hardly be a contract killer, could he. Could he? Of course not.
As we drove he casually informed me that he’d, ‘Done it for the Kray’s, mate.’ That would have been the notorious East London gangsters he was referring to, known to kill, or have killed, without conscience.
Once I’d dropped him off and recovered my composure, I realised I was looking at fodder for a short story. What then followed was a raft of short stories, including, ‘I am a Gigolo,’ something I told my wife when I first met her, and which almost ended our relationship before it had begun. That title is now the heading for a book of short stories.
Jokingly, over lunch, I told a fellow professional I’d once been a contract killer, and devised a story. He believed every word, and left me at some pains to disabuse him. That title, I am a Contract Killer, now heads a further collection of short stories.
Writer of scary short stories and full-length novels like The Lyme Regis Murders.
It’s been an fascinating journey... I hope you’ll want to share with me.
