By Jannifer Powelson
Rachel and Sammy Visit the Prairie by Jannifer Powelson is a wonderful story that teaches children about the plants and flowers that can be found in the prairie. Children follow Rachel Raccoon and her friend Sammy Skunk as they explore the prairie near their home. Rachel acts as Sammy's guide as they discover many of the plants that grow wild in the prairie. Something that makes this story so special is the use of actual pictures of the plant life. The book still has traditional illustrations that are vividly done by Kalpart, but the use of actual photos creates a guidebook that children can use to discover the plants and flowers of the prairie while undertaking their own adventure.
