Riki's Tale by Sophie Kittredge is a heartwarming story about an energetic dog named Riki, who finally finds a home.
One day while Taro was helping his father sell their fish at the market he sees a strange furry tail and wonders what kind of fish it belongs to. Taro soon realizes the tail belongs to a dog that has just stolen an octopus for dinner. As the dog makes his escape he also makes a mess. The villagers are not pleased. The next day Taro gets another surprise, the dog from the market followed him home. Taro decides to name the dog Riki which means strength in Japanese. Taro's parents allow him to keep Riki and the two became fast friends. However, Riki is a very curious dog and tends to get into mischief. After one such occasion he is no longer allowed to sleep in the house. Being alone in the dark scares Riki and he begins hearing noises. He soon realizes some one is stealing the families ducks. Can Riki be brave and stop the thief?
Riki's Tale is set in Japan and the detailed illustrations help children understand traditional Japanese lifestyle. They are even introduced to a few Japanese words.
Children will find Riki's silly antics humorous and will celebrate in the special bond Taro and Riki share.
