Synopsis: Emerson McBride is a normal American teenager. She goes to school, plays soccer, and roams the mall with friends. Her life is just like any other 14-year-old’s until she is sent to clean the attic in the old Victorian as punishment for fighting with her younger brother.
Suddenly, she is thrown back in time to a totally foreign world. Frightened, and armed only with dreams of her grandfather, Emerson ventures into the unknown.
How did she get here? Who are these people? Where is she and why is she here? These questions and many more follow Emerson into a new life in a new land.
My Review
While being forced to clean the attic as punishment, Emerson discovers an old trunk. As Emerson examines the trunk's contents she begins to feel lightheaded and passes out. When she awakens she finds she's no longer in the attic and suddenly people are referring to her as Emma. Emerson thinks it's all just a bad dream, but is it?
The Blue Velvet is an imaginative, well-penned story that shifts seamlessly between the 1800's and present day. Readers are pulled into the past right along with the main character and the interesting events that unfold as a result are captivating. An excellent story for middle grade readers.
