Meet Derrick Lee Mitchel, Author of Miyah and Koala's First Day

Picture
What inspired you to become a children's author?
My daughter inspires me. When my daughter was younger she enjoyed me reading books to her. I thought it would be nice to be able to read a book that was illustrated and written by me.

How did you come up with the idea for Miyah and Koala's First Day?
This title is based on my daughter’s first day in the third grade. I remember how excited she was about going to a new school and receiving a new puppy.

What do you think children will enjoy most about your books?

Children will enjoy the bright and colorful illustrations as they go through many adventures with Miyah, Koala, and her friends.

What advice would you give to a new author trying to get their book published?
Never give up on your dreams, write down your ideas, and listen to your mother. My mother always told me that I should do something with my gift to draw and I have finally done it. I want to thank my mother for believing in me.

Are you currently working on other books?
Yes, I am currently working on three books; two are a part of the Miyah and Koala series. Don’t Cry a book about bullying is scheduled for release in June. Another book in the series is based on healthy eating and physical activity in young children is scheduled to be released in July. I don’t have the title yet, but I am working on it. I just finished writing Dogbets an alphabet book due for release in August or September.
