Meet Kate Mueller, Author of Bella's Birthday Surprise

What inspired you to write a children's book?
I have always loved to write, especially poetry. When I became a mom I enjoyed sitting and reading stories to my children. Most evenings before bed we are curled up on the couch reading together, getting lost in an adventure or a fairy tale. So my inspiration is my children.
How did you come up with the idea for Bella's Birthday Surprise?
The story is completely true, the night of Bella's party I wanted to remember the evening so I sat down and wrote a poem about the events of the day. That poem was Bella's Birthday Surprise. I showed the poem to my mom one day (an elementary teacher for 36 years) and she told me that I should make it into a book. So I did.
Do you have a favorite topic to write about?
A favorite topic..no not really. I just enjoy writing about what I know, or events that have happen. I like to make up little poems about trips we go on or an occasion we have celebrated. I love to write about my kids, they really do some silly things.
What was your favorite book as a child?
Hands down the Walt Disney version of Cinderella. LOVED THAT BOOK. I memorized it from reading it so many times.
Author's don't always get to choose their illustrators. Are you happy with how the illustrations turned out?
I was one of the lucky ones. I hand chose my illustrator she is my sister in law. I love how they turned out, she is amazing, not only in her abilities as an artist but as a sister.
Are you currently working on other books?
Yes I am! I went the route of self publishing with Bella's Birthday Surprise because I wanted a say in who my illustrator was and I wanted things to have a specific look and feel not to mention just get it out there. Now that I have a book under my belt I think this next time I will try the traditional way to publish. I would love to make my books into a series. I have two more books written with ideas for many to follow. One thing at a time though. Finding an agent is not that easy I have found.
