Meet Virginia Degner, author of Without Consent

What inspired you to become an author?
I have always been a writer. I was a newspaper columnist in the Bay Area for a few years in the past. I became a Social Worker and wrote the equivalent of several novels in words alone. But I have always wanted to write a book so that has become my focus now that I am retired from Social Working. I have so many stories and life experiences that they are just bursting to get used.
How did you come up with the idea for your book Without Consent?
I've been intrigued with the idea of using a medical situation for a novel and Without Consent is a legal term that fit in well and became the premise. The book wrote itself after I found my direction. I asked myself this question. What if a doctor did something to a client without their consent? Then afterwords was afraid of losing his license, so he schemed to kill my protagonist, Ariel, to get rid of the evidence.
What was the experience of getting Without Consent published like for you?
It was a lot of fun working with the great editors and all of the people that it takes to put out a book.
I was amazed that everything was done online with e-mail and my novel would go back and forth between myself and my editor for corrections. I have never talked on the phone with any of my editors.
What do you think readers will remember most about your book?
I think the setting and family that I created will be liked. I also think the mystery and murders will be fun for the reader. My fans who have written to me like how I created the medical situation and the unexpected outcome. I've received a lot of comments on how well they liked my description of Scotland and they wondered if I had actually been there. I answer them " only in my heart and through the Internet". Others like the detail I put in the book.
Do you have a favorite subject to write about?
Family's intrigue me. We all come from some form of family and being a family system's therapist, I tried to create an idealized version of a family that I wished to come from and maybe others will identify with that desire as well.
Are you currently working on any other books?
Yes. I'm working on a sequel to the first novel which I'm calling Without Justice, it will pick up where the first novel left off but it will focus on Ariel's sister Lily, who is a physician whose Fiancee was murdered in the first book and go into more detail about why Matt was killed and why someone now seeks revenge by stalking Lily. It's been fun to re-visit the family and this time I'm introducing rescued miniature horses that will join the family's menagerie.
